The Aquitaine region
Biarritz:About an hour's drive , Biarritz has chic shops, street restaurants, a sweeping promenade and a grande plage that was historically popular not only with European royalty - including Queen Victoria herself - but also Richard the Lion Heart and Frank Sinatra!(not together)
St Paul les Dax is France's foremost spa town, with a beautiful lake fed by hot thermal waters that were first discovered and used by the Romans. As well as this bathing opportunity, there is also an old town area with a fantastic Saturday morning market, and the ubiquitous Auchan mall for those who like some serious retail therapy.
Dax also has a premiership rugby club, and a cathedral that dates back to the seventeenth century.
Hossegor: Widely known as the surfing capital of Europe, Hossegor is just forty-five minutes from Cassen so beautifu8l beachy shops and great street cafes.
Places To Visit:
Drive south to the Rhune you can either walk up this big hill (about the size of Ingleton) or catch the train. Then drop into bijou St John Des Luz – some lovely street restaurants and safe beach.
Open air ‘natural’ pool head for Mugron take a left and as you drive out of the town you will pick up signs for a camp-site – it is next to that and is safe for young children.
Biarritz and Anglet are lovely beaches as are Hossegor for surfing. Have a wander round the fish market at Capbreton and sample the seafood restaurants. There are walks around the village you will see these behind the cupboard door.
There is a good Auberge/ ferme restaurant in the village and also a pizza place – and also opposite the spa place on the way back to Pontonx.
Intermarche is the cheapest supermarket use loyalty card in key cupboard and it will save you up to 5%. There is a good Saturday market in Dax.
Try the Calecio spa if you want a real treat it is near the lake in St Paul's – there is a pool sauna etc. Walks around the lake are great and if you want to go out for a very special French meal try the nearby ‘Poustiniaque’ Restaurant (I’m sure this is spelt wrong!)
There is a big water world place opening near Soustons this summer only 8 Euro per day, looks good.
