The Midi-Pyrenees region

The Lot Department is one of the least populated in France and as a result, nature surrounds you. The countryside is mostly rolling hills and vineyards with picturesque villages full of centuries old stone houses. The Cahors wine area lies all around us, and the region is know for its red wine, duck and wild boar.

In July and August temperatures can be in the thirties, with storms to cool everything down every week or so.

September has been the most reliably warm and dry month, and is probably the very best month to stay in this part of Europe.

We have deer eating grass just below the swimming pool in the morning, red squirrels stealing the hazel nuts, nightingales performing after dusk, owls hooting at night, and just down the road you might see wild boar crossing the road on the way to raid the farmer's maize fields.

The pleasure of sitting out on a warm summer night is enhanced by the sight of the stars above against the blackness of space. Being underpopulated, means we have low light pollution, and you can see the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon with your naked eye. The region is ideal for amateur astronomy. (There is also a planetarium at Fumel, 20 minutes away: Observatoire de Lagrolère, GAP 47, Tel 05 53 70 82 81).

Cassagnes is set in the middle of rolling hills, about 10km north of the Lot river (Puy L'Eveque) and 40km south of the Dordogne river.

The village has its annual fete on the first weekend in July. It has a beautiful 12th century church in the center of the village, a large fishing lake (The Plan d'Eau), and a well established campsite with a bar/restaurant opposite the lake.

All around the village are walking tracks (randonnée) and many of these are also used by cyclists (VTT). The Grand Randonnée national walking trail passes close to the village (and our property), and some of the walks take in the Lavoirs, the old stone washing areas, fed by natural sources.
