The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region
The region is rich in history, gastronomy and wildlife. Previously remote it is now well served by motorway links from Rome and Pescara which lies about halfway along the Bologna Bari route. The region is beautiful rising from coastal plain, through hills covered in vines and olives to the mountain ranges to the west and is renowned as the green heart of Europe as much of the region lies within the three designated national parks.
The weather is guaranteed to produce abundant sunshine with temperatures comfortably in the 20s and 30s throughout May to September. The landscape is dotted with hilltop villages and the larger towns boast beautiful architecture and characteristic Italian style. There is huge pride in the culture of the region and the locals are enthusiastic in welcoming visitors to this newly discovered gem.
Abruzzo is an unspoilt region and as yet, relatively undiscovered. You will find the beaches fairly quiet during the week. The climate is warm through from March - November for all outside activities and in December the mountains provide a wealth of ski resorts
There is history in abundance to be found in the area with ancient buildings, religious sites and ruins perched upon cliff tops, such as at Roccascalgena and Gessopalena. There are mountain grottos at Lama dei Peligni which can be reached by means of a very different sort of cable car. For the more adventurous a range of outdoor activities from river rafting to rock climbing can all be found locally. A holiday in Abruzzo will suit individuals and families of all tastes - Abruzzo is much more than a beach holiday.
Casoli, Abruzzo area
Abruzzo is famous for its wines and foods and the house is surrounded by villages where both are available in superb lovely restaurants. A few minutes away is the town of Casoli, where some of the best home-made ice cream in the area can be found as well as a bustling weekly market every Friday morning. The nearest town of Selva di Altino provides an excellent range of restaurants, supermarkets, local produce and banks.
There are also many hilltop villages to visit like Grotte del Cavallone, Roccascalegna, Bocca di Valle, Pennadomo, Pizzoferrato, Gessopalena, Fara San Martino famous for the pasta makers De Cecco and Del Verde.
Further inland the towns of Larna dei Peligni, Pescocostanza and Sulmona are also worth a visit for their architecture, museums and local crafts.
The house is ideally situated for Lake Bomba which is a beautiful place to relax or to be more active with all water sports available here. We are near the mountains which offer stunning views exhilarating walks and intriguing villages for exploration and of course, skiing in the winter.
The Adriatic coast is only a drive away and you can spend days on quiet coves or fully serviced beaches with all tourist facilities available. One of our favourites is that of le Morge which offers warm, shallow waters, safe for bathers of all ages and abilities. The costa dei Trabocchi is over 60 kms long and includes many small bays and coves where you can enjoy a swim in safe, clean waters. For families we are near to Vasto water park which is a thrilling place to spend an exciting day with the family.
Lancianio, about fifteen minutes away, is a small city which mixes old and new. Lanciano is the largest of the local towns. It predates Rome at the centre and has several ancient sites to visit, including the church of the Eucharistic Miracle which allegedly contains a drop of the blood of Christ.
It is a bustling town with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. It has a large market on Saturday where local produce and crafts can be purchased and its popular feste takes place in September. Another nearby town is Atessa, being walled and cobbled with its own market (as most towns and villages have) and shops.
