The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

Exploring Lisbon allows you to find many things to see and do such as streets filled with heritage monuments and characteristic neighbourhoods whose history and unique architecture and beauty can still be experienced at its most genuine level.

The River Tagus riverfront is dedicated to leisure activities where nightlife continues till dawn. From the monumental zone of Belem via the city parks, gardens, belvederes, cafés and esplanades to the modern area of the Parque das Naçoes.

There are many excellent restaurants of high quality gastronomy, considered by some of the most famous gourmets where one can eat the best fish in the world.

Lisboa is the centre of a region with a great variety of interesting cultural and sport activities.

Within this region you have, besides the Estoril and Cascais beach resorts, the romantic Sintra, where the symbioses of nature and palaces resulted in the classification as world heritage and the Queluz National Palace, a 18th century palace located in the city of Queluz, build in baroque-rococo architecture, and has been the residence of the kings of Portugal.

The local climate is usual excellent, clean fresh air from the Atlantic and a clear atmosphere gives the whole region a very special energy.

Thre are several different parks and nature reserves in the area, more excellent golf courses and adrenaline of surfing on the west and southern coats encourage visitors to really enjoy being outdoors. Maybe that's why Lisbon is a city full of animation.

Cascais was an old fishing port – and is still an active fishing port – but it has changed over the past years to become one of the most popular and safe holiday destinations in Portugal with plenty to do and see, both in Cascais and in the surrounding areas.

Historically, Cascais is best remembered as an elegant summer retreat for the 19th Century Portuguese Royal Family and a haven for European royalty who sought refuge in the country's neutral territory during World War II. However, while time has shaped this scenic resort into a glamorous centre of culture, nightlife and top-quality living, Cascais has managed to retain the splendour of its seafaring age through its elegant fortresses, lighthouses and 17th Century citadel now converted into a beautiful Pousada (hotel).

The bay of Cascais, is a main attraction. Enjoy walking along the pedestrian pathways that surround the bay taking note of the contrast between the vivid colours of the small fishing boats and the sober ones of the yachts and sail boats at the yacht club. Stop for a drink or a snack at the small restaurants and snack bars you'll find along the way.

After admiring the bay you may wish to go to the fortress, to The Museum of the Sea and on to the fascinating Museum of Conde Castro Guimaraes, with its small private beach. From time to time some of the best classical concerts that take place here in Cascais.

If you take pleasure in walking in parks, there is one next to the museum where you can relax beneath the shade its foliage provides during the hotter hours of the day.

On your way back towards the bay you can wander through some of the typical narrow streets of the 'old town' and see the traditional white houses, patterned pavements, wrought iron and old tiled fronts.

Wandering through the centre of town is very pleasant and you will discover charming houses, picturesque corners dotted with small cosy restaurants, a twice a week market, there are many cafes and shops in the centre, where you can rest and enjoy watching 'Cascais' moving around you! In other parts of the town you will find old palaces and luxurious villas with magnificent architecture which is worthwhile examining in detail.

The Largo de Camoes square marks the historic centre of Cascais and is a favourite with locals and tourists alike due to the cheerful atmosphere created by its pubs, cafés and restaurants – an especially lively spot in the evening.

There are many sports facilities in the local area, include several golf courses, tennis courts, horse riding facilities , excellent surf beaches and in Estoril the racetrack.

Lisbon is a short car-drive from Cascais, although a quick trip on the railway will also take you to the city centre – a 32 minute pleasant train ride allowing you to admire the beauty of Cascais' coast as it merges into the Lisbon area along the River Tagus.

"A very good base for a relaxing holiday!"

We stayed in the apartment for a week. Our hosts were so friendly and welcoming. We had 1 year old traveling with us and the apartment gave plenty of room to spread out. The facilities were well equipped and the covered parking a bonus. Situated about 25min walk from Cascais centre. It is well placed for visiting the Lisbon area but would advise a car. The apartment is within easy walking distance to supermarket, a cafe and restaurants if you do not want to walk long distance;). A very good base for a relaxing holiday!

"Magnificent, spacious and I'd recommend this apartment to anybody"

We had a fantastic time during our stay here. My fiancee and I were amazed by how big the apartment was. When we arrived we were greeted by the owners who took us around the town and showed us all the best sites to go to. I never experienced this level of service anywhere else I stayed and I really wasn't expecting it. There is a swimming pool on the roof of the apartment and from there you get an incredible view of the city. I would recommend this place to anybody.
