Cascais and Sintra (patrimony of UNESCO) offer some of the best bathing conditions and water-sports in Portugal, depending on the kind of beach you choose.
Along this beautiful coastal area of Europe, the choice of beaches is endless and some of them are famous worldwide for their water sports activities
Less than 5 Km away, you have beach bars and small restaurantes specialise in grilled fish, some of them with wonderfull terraces to enjoy the sun set.
A bigger or lower exposition to the Atlantic ocean means more or less crowded beaches and different water-sports. We recommend the coast along Estoril for sheltered beaches and from Cascais/Guincho until Praia das Maçãs for more wild conditions. Inside Quinta da Marinha resort you have access to one 18-hole championship golf course (by Robert Trent Jones) and just beside you have the Oitavos golf course (by Arthur Hills), a 18-hole course included in the top 100 courses of the world. In September 2011 Oitavos Dunes jumped 20 places up the list to be considered the 68th best course in the world and the second best in mainland Europe. Inside the resort you have also 10 tennis courts (two synthetic grass & eight in clay), 3 Padel courts, 3 Squash/RacketBall courts, Sauna, gym, indoor swimming pool, restaurants and the Marinha Equestrian Centre, considered one of the largest and most well equipped of the Iberian Peninsula..
About 12 km away is the Marina of Cascais and there are a wide range of beach bars that after night turn into a discos or with live music.

The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region
Lisbon, Portugal's capital, a romantic and cultural city, known for its amazing light, is located over seven hills and bathed by the Tagus River. Its history goes back before Roman colonisation and you can still find traces of the different civilizations and cultures that graced this land.
The picturesque and medieval streets of Alfama, Bairro Alto and Chiado, where one can hear the Fado at night, a unique synthesis of old and new, is a must. Splendid monuments, castles and astonishing sights “miradouros” keep you company every step of the way.
There is a large range of activities to do and places to see in Lisbon, like the Oceanario, Europe's biggest aquarium, alone worth the visit for its perfect picture of ocean wild life. This city also offers an abundance of distinguished restaurants, fantastic shopping and great nightlife.
To the west of the city lies mysterious Sintra, a verdant cultural landscape - declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site with its mystical forests crowned with castles, palaces and grand mansions.
Taking a ride on a horse-pulled carriage and gazing at the marvelous manor-houses, as one drives up to Pena Palace, is the perfect experience that epitomises this magical place. It has a vast and endless variety of exotic trees, subtropical plants and shrubs that were imported in the 19th Century, offering, in addition, spectacular views across the coast line.
Sunny Cascais, a chic seaside resort is also located a mere 15 km west of Lisbon. This lively town boasts a number of sandy beaches, excellent restaurants and championship golf courses, as well as a world-class marina.
Near Cascais is the famous beach Guincho, known for its high waves that attract windsurfers from all around the world.
The next town to the east of Cascais is the resort town of Estoril with its popular Casino and great nightlife.
Heading south across the Tagus river, Costa da Caparica, Serra da Arrábida and picturesque villages such as Sesimbra and Setubal are also worth a visit for their natural splendor.
For golf and beach lovers, don't miss Aroeira with 350 hectares golf estate located on a natural reserve and surrounded by a stretch of 30 km of unspoiled sandy beaches backed up by dunes and ochre cliffs, considered the best in Lisbon region.
In terms of gastronomy the Southern part of Lisbon is an area of the most freshly caught fish with an abundance of sea food. Cheese made from ewe's milk in Azeitão and wines produced in the region of Palmela, internationally renowned for their high quality.
Excellent wines are always on the menu and those with a sweet tooth can indulge in wonderful handmade pastries including the delectable “pastéis de Belém”.
The Cascais / Alcabideche area
Cascais is now an active holiday harbour and remains a fishermen village since the medieval times. The catchy village started to be the humble provider of fishing and agriculture activities of the capital city, Lisbon.
In 1870, King Louis II turned Cascais into his summer residence. During the II War, thanks to the Portuguese neutral position and the village's beauty and elegance, most of European royal families came to settle in or to simply enjoy the sun and the beaches. We can still see some of the beautiful mansions built by these nobles through Cascais, Estoril and the surroundings. Many fortresses were built around the village and some of them still exist as well as elder influences, like the flat and star shaped floor plan, characteristics of the renaissance.
Presently, Cascais and its surroundings are one of the favourite spots for both Portuguese and foreigners, seeking for pleasant vacations. It is easy to get there from the capital by train or by car and in the other hand; the village has a wide yacht harbour. For those who prefer to keep away from the big cities and benefit with an equal urban and sophisticated environment, it is the right choice.
There are multiple sand beaches being Guincho the most famous one. The right weather, the right wind and the right sea conditions make Guincho the favourite spot for the surf, sail, windsurf and kite surf lovers.
Due to its propitious conditions, Cascais has been the official host of ISAF World Championship in sailing for dinghies and racing yachts in 2007 as well as the FIA F1 Portugal Grand Prix and Estoril Open.
Cascais offers challenging golf courses surrounded by the beauty loveliness of nature and it is becoming a popular golf destination.
There is no way to get bored, since you may entertain yourself with plenty things. You may visit ruins of a castle, sea and art museums, stroll out through the streets and get familiarized with a particular sidewalk, cobbled with the traditional “Calçada portuguesa”. If you ride a car, heading west, you'll find “Boca do Inferno”, a place where the power of the ocean is fantastic to watch, entering under a rock arch.
In Estoril, you´ll find the biggest Casino in all Europe. By visiting the casino, you´ll see how polyvalent it is and will have a great experience for sure. The casino has a lovely panoramic view of its own gardens and has a fount that features a cyber multimedia water show at night. It also offers exciting shows, art exhibitions and dance and of course, a large offer around 1000 of gaming machines.
The gastronomy is also rich; there are plenty of restaurants that provide large variety and memorable dining experiences in hearty atmospheres, being some of them the right place to fish and seafood lovers. Enjoy and experience also the scrumptious Portuguese wine.
