Hacienda Acedía
About the home
Surrounded by a vast bowl of incomparable mountain majesty, this is one of the most beautiful settings in Andalucía. Here, in the midst of glorious countryside, yet just twenty minutes from Mediterranean beaches, is where renowned architect, Aubrey David, built his own remarkable and very special home.
Its design makes full use of all the architect's skills and intimate knowledge of Mediterranean lifestyle. Lofty double-story ceiling heights, open archways and stepped floor levels give the interiors a really spacious feel. Split-level rooms, clever use of light and space, planted areas indoors and wood-beamed ceilings are just some of the features which make it such a distinctive and attractive property.
A very relaxing house, it offers flair and imagination yet is splendidly practical at the same time. It not only looks good, it feels good, too.

Further details indoors:
Facing south and looking over glorious countryside, this villa has one of the most beautiful settings in Andalucía. It stands alone on a thickly wooded hillside, the mountain peaks of La Sierra Bermeja climbing up majestically behind.
Designed by an award-winning architect Aubrey David who really understood what living in Spain is all about, it's a classic example of his unique, creative style. The south facing views across the fertile valley of La Acedia are fabulous and the villa takes full advantage of them.
Hacienda Acedía is of style and ambiance befitting the home of an accomplished architect, perhaps exemplified by the high timber-beamed cathedral roof and windows.
Once you park your car and walk trough the passage way one gets to the main terrace in front of one of the two pools, in witch an antique wooden door leads you in to the main sitting room connected with the kitchen by an arch and a bar area that is ideal for entertaining.
Any gourmet chef would be proud of the kitchen here, complete with dishwasher, and plenty of space and facilities to cook up a banquet.
It has a very large and spacious living / dining and kitchen area with breathtaking views to the countryside. It opens onto a south facing terrace under a pergola shaded by grapevines, perfect for dining al fresco.
At the far end of the property there is a stone-walled lounge room, opening on to a sun terrace with access down to a garden terrace shaded by a 250 year old cork oak.
The internal garden provides a very comfortable living area in witch there is an open fireplace that is an ideal surround for enjoying a cool winter's night and perhaps a bottle of Rioja!
Half a level down from this second living area is another double bedroom with open plan dressing, bath and shower areas. A child may be accommodated here because the couch converts into a single bed.
The master suite is attached to the main house by a covered porch, with its own private terrace that leads in to the living area. Besides central heating, a cast iron open fireplace adds to the ambiance. It has a semi open-plan design with sloping timber beamed ceilings. There is a separate dressing room (which can accommodate a supplementary bed) and a lovely bathroom with a spa bath.
The cottage has one bedroom with en suite bathroom and its own lounge area with a wooden stove.
The two remaining bedrooms have their own private entrance. Sorted out on two levels which another lounge area in the middle level from which an external half level stair leads to a covered south facing terrace, overlooking one of the swimming pools.
Further details outdoors:
Surrounded, as everything is here, by wonderful nature, there are acres of space in which to lose yourselves so there is no sense at all of being in a complex.
There are two beautiful, spring-fed, filtered swimming pools, (both open throughout the year), one reveling in full Andalusian sunshine from dawn until dusk, the other secluded by trees and natural shade. And a sauna too.
Weather permitting, the swimming pools will be open throughout the year (although, because they are not heated, the normal swimming season is from April to September, inclusive)
Pool #1: 9,40m in diameter & 1,30m to 1,60m deep
Pool #2: 9,5m x 4,5m & 1,50m to 1,70m deep, it also has a small round area that is shallow (1,74m in diameter)

The Costa del Sol region
It would take wild horses to drag most people away from this rural paradise. But anyone who wants to see a little more of Andalucía will be spoiled for choice here. Some of the prettiest and least commercialised beaches on the Mediterranean Sea are literally "just down the road". So, head for the beach, hire a boat and set sail or just enjoy that special "costa" atmosphere from a restaurant at one of the marinas.
Local guide, Kevin, offers guided horse riding for clients staying here, (anything from half an hour to four hours per day). There is also a picadero (with jumps) for anyone who prefers this to hacking out. Children can ride here too.
If you follow the little country road up through the wonderful countryside you will soon arrive at the delightful village of Casares, perched, seemingly precariously, on its steep and dramatic rocky outcrop. A little further away is Gaucín, the other white village in this region which has rightly earned plaudits for its charm and quality of life. And, of course, there's Ronda, Gibraltar, Jerez, Estepona, Marbella …
Take to the countryside and walk to rarely visited Roman baths, hike up Estepona mountain (keeping an eye out for the rare pinsapo pine and cabra hispanica) or wander through fields of spring wild flowers.
Some of the best little restaurants and little tavernas anywhere in Andalucia are all located on this side of Casares village - Arroyo Honda, Venta Garcia, Venta Victoria and the Forge. The first two are especially highly recommended. For golf enthusiasts, there are at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) within 30 minutes drive. Highly recommended is "Finca Cortesin", a five star golf and spa resort which was host to the Volvo Masters Matchplay Championships, just ten minutes away from the villa.
Whatever your preference, here you are ideally situated between the sea and the sierras, the perfect place to enjoy the very best of Andalucía.
The Casares area
So you can choose between the beaches, fun and frolics of the Costa del Sol, or the timeless beauty of some of inland Andalucía's most beautiful countryside and charming towns and villages. Nearby Casares, Gaucín, Jimena de la Frontera, Genalguacil and, further to the north, delightful old Ronda and the mountain village of Grazalema are all attractive, lovely places, well worth visiting.
The beaches of the western reaches of the Costa del Sol, the nearest to the villa, are much less "touristy" and less congested than those further east. It is still possible to find swathes of empty golden sand here. Estepona is the nearest of the resort towns on the coast, a little more than fifteen minutes away. Marbella, with all its glitz and glamour, and Gibraltar, take 40 minutes.
There are lots of lovely walks in the area and horse riding stables are just down the lane, too. For golf enthusiasts, there are at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) within 30 minutes drive. Highly recommended is "Finca Cortesin", host to the Volvo Masters Matchplay Championships, less than ten minutes away from the villa.
Locally, three roadside ventas are within five minutes drive from the villa, offering good, simple home cooking. "Arroyo Hondo", on the way to Casares, is highly recommended. Owned by an English and Japanese couple, their food combines the best of both cultures and is delicious.
The great historic cities of Andalucía, Sevilla, Granada and Córdoba are between two and three hours drive.
Whatever your preference, here you are ideally situated between the sea and the sierras, the perfect place to enjoy the very best of Andalucía.
