The Algarve region
The Algarve is situated on Portugal's southern coast and takes its name from the Arabic Al Gharb meaning 'country to the west'.
The region is divided up in to 16 municipalities including Albufeira, Aljezur, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos and Tavira and covers over 5,000 square kilometers.
There are over 350,000 permanent inhabitants and during the summer months this figure increases to over 1 million due to the influx of tourists.
Temperatures during the summer months regularly reach over 30 degrees and the average daytime temperature during the winter is around 14 degrees
The climate, location and the landscape of the Algarve make this the ideal golfing paradise with over 20 tended courses including Sir Henry Cottons' Championship course at Penina.
However, the Algarve is not just about Golf. The region has something for everyone including watersports, horseriding, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, shopping, theme parks and of course its record number of EEC 'Blue flag award' beaches.
The Algarve dates back to around 4000 years ago when the earliest settlers established the towns of Lagoa, Lagos and Tavira. Much of todays architecture is based on the Moorish traditions from the 8th century when Silves was the capital of the region and the Moors ruled over the area. It wasn't until 1249 that the region became part of the Kingdom of Portugal.
Modern day Algarve has benefitted enormously from Portugal's membership in the EU and funding has been used to develop the road network including the A22 motorway that stretches from Vila Real de Santo Antonio in the east to Lagos in the west and the Guidaiana river bridge that links Portugal and Spain.
The region is also a 'stopover' point for migrating birds on their way to Africa.
A visit to Cape St Vincent, where Nelson defeated the Spanish during the French Revolutionary wars west of Sagres is a must for all bird lovers.
During October, March and April you will see a vast array of bird species making there journey north or south.
The village of Carvoeiro is situated approximately 45 minutes drive west of Faro airport. The village is the ideal holiday destination for families of all age groups. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, gift shops and bars.
Beaches - The three beaches local to Carvoeiro are (1) Praia do Carvoeiro - situated next to the village square, (2) Praia Vale Cove - situated near to the Hotel Almansor approx 1.5km east of the village and (3) Praia Vale Centeanes - situated approx 1km from Rocha Brava. All three provide an excellent environment for the beach lover.
The emphasis of the village is on food. If you enjoy eating out then Carvoeiro is the place to go. There is everything from traditional Portuguese restaurants to Chinese restaurants, Pizza parlours, Burger bars and excellent Steak houses. There is also a variety of restaurants surrounding the outskirts of the village providing a huge choice that will satisfy any appetite.
Activities - There are lots of things to do in and around Carvoeiro including shopping, fishing, 2 water parks, Zoomarine sealife centre, Crazy World (crazy golf and nature reserve), and of course golfing.
Nearby - The fishing port of Portimao lies a 15 minute drive west of Carvoeiro. This is the place to come to book your fishing trips out to sea including deep sea shark fishing. Portimao is also famous for its shopping with hundreds of shops situated around cobbled streets and numerous cafes.
The town of Silves is a 15 minute drive north from Carvoeiro and was the capital of the Algarve in Moorish times. Its points of interest include its majestic restored Moorish castle, its Gothic cathedral and the "Cruz da Portugal".
A 20 minute drive east of Carvoeiro takes you to the new "Algarve Shopping" shopping centre which houses a bowling alley, multi screen cinema, McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut etc as well as a wealth of shops including famous brands such as Benetton and Sony.

"Fabulous place to stay you really do have everything here"
We loved our stay in Casa Eileen. It is well managed clean and comfortable and in a great location. The children enjoyed the pool and we were quite happy to watch!! There are some great restaurants within walking distance we didn't even mind the walk up the hill back from town. Ideal location for exploring the Western Algarve - Lagos Silves Sagres and Cape St. Vincent and the beaches are beautiful Salema being a favourite. We would love to return to Casa Eileen. Thank-you.
