The Algarve region
The Algarve is situated on Portugal's southern coast and takes its name from the Arabic Al Gharb meaning 'country to the west'.
The region is divided up in to 16 municipalities including Albufeira, Aljezur, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos and Tavira and covers over 5,000 square kilometers.
There are over 350,000 permanent inhabitants and during the summer months this figure increases to over 1 million due to the influx of tourists.
Temperatures during the summer months regularly reach over 30 degrees and the average daytime temperature during the winter is around 14 degrees
The climate, location and the landscape of the Algarve make this the ideal golfing paradise with over 20 tended courses including Sir Henry Cottons' Championship course at Penina.
However, the Algarve is not just about Golf. The region has something for everyone including watersports, horseriding, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, shopping, theme parks and of course its record number of EEC 'Blue flag award' beaches.
The Algarve dates back to around 4000 years ago when the earliest settlers established the towns of Lagoa, Lagos and Tavira. Much of todays architecture is based on the Moorish traditions from the 8th century when Silves was the capital of the region and the Moors ruled over the area. It wasn't until 1249 that the region became part of the Kingdom of Portugal.
Modern day Algarve has benefitted enormously from Portugal's membership in the EU and funding has been used to develop the road network including the A22 motorway that stretches from Vila Real de Santo Antonio in the east to Lagos in the west and the Guidaiana river bridge that links Portugal and Spain.
The region is also a 'stopover' point for migrating birds on their way to Africa.
A visit to Cape St Vincent, where Nelson defeated the Spanish during the French Revolutionary wars west of Sagres is a must for all bird lovers.
During October, March and April you will see a vast array of bird species making there journey north or south.

Guestbook
- We had a lovely holiday and the villa was great - very comfortable and well equipped. I haven't thought about our holiday plans for next year but if we decide to go back to Portugal I'm sure I will be in touch.
- Thank you for an enjoyable stay in your villa. It proved to be ideally located for the children's mini club and our children really enjoyed the freedom to come and go when they wanted. We also enjoyed being close to all the other facilities without being close enogh for noise.
- Just like to say how much we really enjoyed our stay in 'Casa Eileen', thank you for the wine on arrival and for providing most excellent facilities which made for a brilliant holiday.
