The Algarve region
Carvoeiro is situated on the border of central & western Algarve. It was a small fishing village in the 60's and 70's and fortunately it has grown without succumbing to the unsightly development that has blighted so many of southern Europe's coastal resort towns.
Standing on the cliff top above Carvoeiro beach, it's surprisingly difficult to pinpoint the changes that have taken place over the last three decades. The white houses which dot the hillsides still look the same – but there are more of them. The view of the beach below has changed even less, except for the disappearance of the old fishing boats and the addition of the huge boulders to the east of the bay where part of the cliff collapsed – thankfully when the beach was empty – in 1995. The difference between Carvoeiro and most other coastal towns is that development has been outwards rather than upwards. There are no high rises and most of the development has been sympathetic to the landscape. While the population, both resident and tourist, has spiralled, the "village", as it is affectionately known, has managed to retain a good deal of its aesthetic charm.
The villa is situated approx. 5-6 minutes' drive from the centre of Carvoeiro, in an area known as Sesmarias, where there is a local mini-market, bar and restaurant - all within 5 minutes walking distance from the villa. 6 minutes' walk takes you to the renowned Bon Bon Restaurant which serves international cuisine and carries a four star rating. Caneiros Beach, with its' excellent restaurant, is 5 minutes' drive away. It is conveniently located for access to many beaches, Ferragudo and Carvoeiro.
The Algarve is obviously spoilt for choice with championship golf courses. Pestana golf resort (Pinta and Gramacho) are only 5 minutes' drive and within half an hour, there are at least another 10 courses, including the superb Oceanico Faldo and O'Connor courses, more suited for the lower handicappers.
