The Algarve region
The most southerly region of Portugal, the Algarve is one of the most beautiful and historic coastal regions in Europe. Stretching from the Spanish border in the east along to the dramatic clifftops of Cape St Vincent, the furthest south-westerly corner of Europe, the Algarve coast is a beautiful array of stunning beaches, and dramatic bays cut into soaring honey coloured sandstone cliffs.
The coastline is studded with old fishing villages and ports and harbours whose history goes back to the exploration of Magellan and Christopher Columbus. A place to explore, or just relax on some of the best sand in the world.
Whilst a tourist region, Algarve is also agricultural, producing oranges, wine and from its seas, some wonderful fresh fish.
Tourist development has been kept in check, consisting mainly of low rise, well planned development. Most areas wont allow hotels to go above 3 stories high, and in the Algarve you wont experience the apparently uncontrolled holiday development of some other parts of Europe.
Carvoeiro is in the western Algarve. Nestling within a cove of honey coloured cliffs, this expanded fishing village, it is now a small to medium sized family resort, with several lovely sandy beaches close at hand.
There are plenty of restaurants, serving food to suit all tastes and pockets.
The village of Carvoeiro sits at the head of its own "Town Beach", a charming bay with villas, restaurants and bars, placed on the narrow roads that snake up the cliffs on either side of the bay.
As well as lovely beaches the area also offers some beautifully scenic walking, several top class golf courses, and boat trips to view the caverns and caves under the cliffs, and dolphins and porpoise if you are lucky.
For the children there are 3 waterparks in the area, one offering a dolphin show.
Inland from the coast, there are trips to the Monchique mountains, to explore the citrus groves, and a chance to visit the 11th century Moorish city of Silves.

"Didn't want to leave."
My wife and I found Villa Juliana very different from other villas and apartments we'd rented over the years. It is the first we've ever rented in which we felt at home. The furnishings and … More

"Plain Basic and a Learning Experience"
Stayed with my family and the villa is just basic. A bit far from the main town area. The television reception was fuzzy and some nights we heard dogs barking for many hours. One or two nights maybe o… More
This review is distinctly unfair.
The 2 main double beds are king sized divans, and both brand new for last season. They may be a little firm, but most clients have expressed a preference for a firmer bed.
The TV reception is not fuzzy. As advertised it is a service via SKY dish.
The villa is far from rustic, and as can be clearly seen from the advertisement photos, is modern and open plan.
The villa is a little way outside Carvoeiro, but very close to the beach. All as advertised.
I cant comment on dogs barking throughout the night. It is not something we have experienced, and no other guests have complained of this.
The only valid complaint is that because of very high temperatures last season, we suffered from inexplicable tile cracking, and we had to have builders called in in order to make emergency repairs, both for safety and aesthetic reasons.
The vast majority of guests leave very complimentary comments in our comments book.
This client left NO comments whatso ever. Nor did they make any complaint or comment to our managing agents, who would have attempted to address any complaint with the client, there and then.
I do not accept this complaint as being justifiable or balanced and reasonable.

"A real home from home"
We have been renting villas for many years now and Villa Juliana certainly has to be one of the best. It is so well equipped and the location is just perfect, within easy walking distance of one of those oh-so-picturesque Algarve beaches, a few restaurants and a very handy local shop for those mid-afternoon ice-creams. The rooms are spacious and very homely and the outside seating area is a real bonus for both eating and sitting out well into the evening thanks to the fantastic Algarve climate (we had forgotten just how perfect it is in late July). Plenty of books and magazines to read, a superb barbecue and a feeling of security and tranquillity - we really didn't want to stray too far or leave at the end of a wonderful weeks. all contact in advance and payments went like clockwork and the local Elite Villas staff couldn't be more helpful. A holiday we'll remember fondly. Thanks Bruce.
