The Algarve / Central Algarve region
Land of the Sun Algarve! Washed in the south and west by the Atlantic, protected fom the north by mountain ranges that temper the strong winds, this region of calm, warm around 24° C/75°F in winter. The sun shines brilliantly almost all year round giving the region its characteristic light. The Algarve region The Algarve region is blessed with a wonderful climate, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports in summer, and mild enough in spring, autumn and winter for tennis, golf, clifftop or countrywide walking, exploring and sightseeing.
The legacy of a 500 year occupation by the Moors can be seen in the architecture and historic towns of the region, such as Silves (6 km from villa), with its towering castle walls, ancient cathedral, and museum. Winding streets lead down to the Roman bridge on the River Arade, from where boat trips can be taken to Portimao. For the modern visitor there are the necessary banks, restaurants, a covered food market, supermarket and shops.
Places of interest include Caldas de Monchique, a spa village dating back to Roman times. Recently restored, it has a lovely restaurant, and is en route for Foia, the highest point of the Algarve, from where there are spectacular views right down to the coast, through the Monchique hills with their fragrant Eucalyptus trees. On the coastline Portimao, an old fishing port, now a bustling town can be seen, with its modern road bridge.
The historic old port of Lagos, with nearby beautiful caves at Praia Dona Ana (accessible by fisherman's boat from the beach) and towering sandstone cliffs is well worth a visit. The beaches with golden sand and towering cliffs are quite breathtaking. The local fishermen take visitors for a tour of the caves, and often visitors swim from the boats within the acquamarine water of the caves.
Faro old town (45 kms), and Tavira with its camera obscura , and nearby bird nature reserve are also of great interest.
For train lovers, an excellent service runs from Tunes Station (just beyond Algoz village), main line to Lisbon, over the River Tagus right into the city itself (a three hour journey), with some trains continuing on as far north as Oporto. Trains are comfortable, reasonable in price and a joy to use. Concessionary prices are available for young people and over 60's on production of passport.
An hour's drive past Faro takes you across the border between Portugal and Spain, and Seville is now a 3 hour drive away. (Check your car insurance first with your hire company).
