About this location
The Algarve region
Throughout the Algarve, old traditions mingle with more cosmopolitan ways of life in a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. A land of contrasts, of sheer cliffs and rolling hills and beautiful beaches. There are vast stretches of fine golden sand, extensive dunes and sandy coves backed by spectacular cliffs and rock formations all along the Algarve coast. The Algarve has much to offer the discerning traveller and there is sure to be an Algarve holiday villa to suit your particular tastes and holiday plans.
For those looking for activity holidays, the Algarve is one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations whilst the tennis schools offer fantastic facilities. Water sports are second to none with waterskiing, scuba-diving, big game fishing and dolphin spotting trips available at most beach resorts.
Accommodation ranges from large luxury holiday villas in Vale do Lobo, complete with private pools to smart apartments and townhouses and more modest, rustic cottages. There is something to suit everyone's tastes and needs whether you prefer to be close to the beach, in luxury golf resorts or nestled in rolling countryside or traditional villages.
Getting around the Algarve is relatively easy with an excellent road system following the coast and, for those who do not have a car, public transport is available. With everything so accessible, even the villas some distance inland can be just a few minutes’ drive from the nearest towns and beaches. Portugal is famous for its port and also produces excellent wine which is not often found beyond its shores. There is a wonderful selection of cosmopolitan restaurants, more modest eateries and bustling cafes offering mouth-watering local dishes, fresh fish, and spicy piri-piri, along with flavours and cuisine from around the world. Holiday makers considering renting a villa in the Algarve are assured that there is truly something for everyone.
Set in an excellent location, the community of Clube Carvoeiro is to the west of the town and is within reasonable walking distance of a huge selection of family friendly restaurants, bars and shops, as well as the golden sandy beaches. Clube Carvoeiro is well known for its tennis centre; you can have private and group lessons or just rent a court. There's also the renowned restaurant O Encontro.
Monte Carvoeiro is within easy walking distance, with a supermarket, a selection of restaurants and the famous Jazz bar, with authentic live music on most evenings. From Monte Carvoeiro it's just a short walk down into the centre of Carvoeiro, although you might consider getting a taxi back up the hill after shopping or dining. Here there is an even wider choice of amenities and the town beach with several open-air restaurants on the pedestrianised esplanade and regular entertainment in summer.
Carvoeiro is particularly well known for its beaches. The rocky coastline has been eroded over time into a series of stunning, sandy coves. They are breathtakingly beautiful but need to be accessed with care and sensible footwear. Many of the beaches also have snack bars for a drink or light lunch.
Over to the west, where the calm waters of the River Arade meet the sea and separate Carvoeiro from Portimao is Ferragudo. This is a resort in its own right, about 4 kilometres from the centre of Carvoeiro and offers a wide range of watersports. Between here and the town are many smaller coves, accessible only on foot or by boat. Currais, Lapa and Paraiso are close to the town and within easy reach of Clube Carvoeiro.
On the Eastern side of town, some of the beaches have been a little more developed, mainly by hotels, and Almanzor and Centiannes are definitely worth a visit. Beyond Rocha Brava and the Farol lighthouse is Smuggler's beach, also known as Carvalho, which is reached by a cliff path that cuts through the rock in a series of tunnels. Further east is Benagil beach and the stunning Marinha beach, with its distinctive rock stacks. Both of these beaches have snack bars. As in most of the Algarve, golf courses abound in this area.
The Carvoeiro Country Club centres around the Grammacho and Pinta courses near to Lagoa, as well as Vale do Milho, a challenging 9-hole course with a great clubhouse. There are tennis centres in Clube Carvoeiro and Rocha Brava and a riding centre and watersports at Ferragudo to the west. Waterparks are popular in the Algarve, the nearest is Slide and Splash, a smaller park between Lagoa and the Country Club. Several other parks are along the EN 125 heading towards Faro. Also worth a visit is the Zoo-Marine park, which is located just west of Guia. It has rides, animal shows and the opportunity to swim with dolphins.
There are several boat trips available in the Carvoeiro area, exploring the fantastic coastline and stopping at exotic beaches. Perhaps the most memorable day out and under sail is aboard Santa Bernada - a replica caravelle, which departs from the old sardine pier in Portimao on weekdays
