The Midi-Pyrenees / Lot region

Carennac is perfectly placed to experience the popular tourist region of the Dordogne valley . Here there's an unrivalled combination of ancient civilisation (like the world famous caves and paintings at Lascaux, with medieval history. It was here that the Hundred Years War was fought out and there are the spectacular castles on the banks of the Dordogne (like Beynac and Castlenau) to remind you, along with fortified medieval towns perfectly preserved to bring that to life. There a staggering array of places to see but the countryside itself is just as big an attraction. There's an incredible variety of terrain within just a few miles, from the lush valley to stark rocky landscape a few miles north to densely wooded hills close by. The twisty roads are a delight to drive. The climate ranges from cold crisp and beautiful in the winter to a very early warm spring and a summer which lasts and lasts with spells which can reach into the 40s but are usually in the 30s. Carennac itself has a microclimate which means it never seems as cold as some other nearby places in the winter. The season is now stretching further into the autumn which is still warm and a perfect time to visit.
The Carrennac area
Delightful as Carennac is, it is also perfectly placed to visit all the major attractions of the region. Chief of these is the medieval town of Sarlat to the west which is almost a timewarp, its medieval old town large, busy and truly impressive. One of France's most famous sites, the shrine of Rocamadour perched high on an enormous cliff is only minutes away to the south. Not only is Carennac itself officially one of the most beautiful villages in France it's close to many others, like Curemonte, Collonges La Rouge, the hilltop village of Turenne and the incredible Autoire just along the river from Carennac itself. Every small town and village has local markets in an area world renowned for its food like foie gras and canard. The countryside itself provides most of the activities ; it's a paradise for horse riders, cyclists, walkers (and if you're feeling lazy, drivers) while the Dordogne just has to be canoed. Canoes can be hired all along the river (Carennac included) with a bus service to return you to your start point. Areas of the river are safe enough to swim in, as is the huge Lac de Cause to the north while rather closer is a superb water park at Betaille only minutes away.

Stop Press; BRIVE/SOUILLAC airport has now opened and is only 30 minutes from Carennac. The easiest way to reach La Maison de Pan de Bois from most UK airports is via Limoges airport with Ryanair or Flybe. Limoges is around an hour and a half away to the north but there's not much to choose between Limoges and Rodez airport to the south east and both are served by Ryanair. Toulouse airport is another option and that's a couple of hours to the south; it is served by the major airlines as well as the likes of Easyjet and BA and AirFrance; prices are sometimes very competitive. Car hire is possible at Brive (Vallee la Dordogne), Limoges, Toulouse and Rodez, the most economical being Europcar.
It takes around six hours to drive down from Caen or Le Havre and around eight from Calais.
Coming from the USA the best bet is either hiring a car in Paris or taking the train down to either Brive La Gaillarde in the Correze (where it's easier to hire a car) around 40 minutes away or Souillac which is nearer to Carennac.

I really cannot praise high enough La Maison de Pan de Bois and the village of Carennac. Penny provides a well appointed, comfortable home (not just a house) with all modern amenities. Carennac is beautiful in itself but is also well situated for day trips to local sites. My family of five were extremely happy there and all decided that it was the best week of our 6 week holiday! |

A wonderful old house, full of character. We felt right at home as soon as we got there and didn't want to leave. The house has excellent facilities and the town is just as quaint. There are several restaurants all within walking distance and a small shop if you want to cook yourself but it's best to drive to the supermarkets in one of the nearby towns of you want fresh meats. Pennys a lovely hostess, extremely helpful and has left lots of information in a folder to make life easy when you get there |

The house was a genuine medieval building tastefully appointed with antique furniture but all mod cons set in a beautiful historic village in the Dordogne. There were lots of the best sites in France to visit nearby e.g. Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac and several other beautiful villages and a spectacular topiary garden at Eyrignac. Food and wine are examples of the best in France and there are plenty of excellent friendly restaurants in the village, a grocery shop and a weekly market.. The house was homely and the proprietor welcoming leaving flowers and wine to welcome us.We swam and canoed on the river. There were lots of little towns nearby for supermarkets, shops, pharmacy etc. The best thing about the holiday was the beauty of the setting and its sense of peace. We had no complaints. |
Guestbook for La Maison de Pan de Bois
Thank you for this lovely spot - surely the prettiest in the region. We loved every minute , and enjoyed the winding road under the cliff at Gluges, the crepes at the corner cafe here in Carennac and we can't wait to come back. Penny J, San Francisco, California, USA
Congratulations on a beautiful restoration. We loved the intrigue of this medieval place an the beauty of the area. We can recommend canoeing from Roque Gageac (for the ebst view of the chateaux), the musee prehistoire at Les Eyzies and Sarlat. Lesley S, Lynton, Australia
What a wonderful two weeks we spent in Carennac. We adored this medieval townhouse - three levels of luxury. You have thought of all the things which make a stay so comfortable and easy. The interior design is superb - very French and tru to the history of the house but with all the modern conveniences which we have come to expect. Fiona M, Australia.
