The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region
Carpentras is located in te heart of the Comtat Venaissin region, which calls to mind the Tuscan countryside. Located in that rich and agricultural Provence, whose soils from the RHONE VALLEY, gave birth to the local weekly typical markets with large range of products displayed : strawberries, melons... wines and the unmissable "truffes" so called "black diamonds". That typically Mediterranean countryside is full of contrasting delights, all protected from the east by the famous GIANT OF PROVENCE "Mont Ventoux".
The Vaucluse district is dotted with beautiful villages with rich historical past and cultural interest .
Carpentras area
Carpentras was once known as the city of GAULS , used to be both an acropolis and a market place, before it became the capital of the Comtat Venaissin in the Middle ages. The city was papal property from the 13th to the 18th centuries. From the Roman period remain numerous mosaics, potteries.. and the famous Roman Arch with huge defensive walls.
The popes had the Episcopal palace built, together with the Cathedral and the Hospital which was erected as well as the famous Aqueduc which brought drinkable water to public fountains. Quite traditional and highly diversified, arts and crafts in CARPENTRAS are of an important dimension of the Comtadin lifestyle. For the past thirty years, the population in the city has steadily grown from 10000 up to 28000 inhabitants. However, while facing the future with a market of national interest adapted to the moderne agriculture and business, the city has carefully protected its past ; the old city attests that Carpentras ios actually dedicated to the preserving of its heritage bequeathed by the preceeding generation.
TO VISIT IN THE NEARBY ; AVIGNON, THE CITY OF THE POPES AND ITS FESTIVALS; ORANGE, VAISON LA ROMAINE for the Roman arches and theatre, and the festivals. Many villages all around . GREAT SITES FOR hikers..
