The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region

The restaurants and village shops that can supply almost everything you might need for day to day living are just a stroll from the house. There's plenty to see and do in the area: pretty hilltop villages, the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard, Roman amphitheatres in Orange, Nimes, Arles and Vaison la Romaine - wineries and caves throughout the Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Ventoux region with names like Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Beaumes de Venise to tempt the most discerning wine enthusiast.
Avignon is about just over half an hour away – it’s a walled city bustling with an eclectic and vibrant mix of culture and chic. You can drive up into the hills around Sault to see the lavender fields, set like jewels against the blue skies - springtime wild flowers reward the walkers and cyclists – bargain hunters will love the flea markets as well as the antiques and bric-a-brac at L’isle sur la Sorgue and the Mediterranean coast is within easy reach for a harbour side lunch or you can take a leisurely lunch aboard a riverboat down the Rhone from Avignon to Arles. It is all here for you to enjoy at your own pace!
The scenery is fantastic whether you’re on foot, bicycle or driving and every day there are local markets simply bursting with fresh local produce including asparagus, strawberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, melons, tomatoes, olives, goats cheeses, honey, oil……… the list is endless and too delicious for words!

We had a lovely ten days at Gordon's House. Despite arriving in a rainstorm of biblical proportions, Chantal's directions were extremely accurate and easy to follow. The lane IS pretty tight but unloading the car's contents into the hallway and then moving the car was no hardship. Parking is available in the main square (50m) or on the street opposite the house and felt very safe. The accommodation itself is split over three levels so one does get quite fit going up and down the winding stairs. When we were there in September the sun didn't really hit the secluded back garden until about 2p.m. which meant we tended to be active in the mornings and have a lovely snooze and bit of sun after a relaxing lunch somewhere. The hammock is a genius thing! I guess it is just a case of getting in tune with the local rhythm. The "middle" floor of lounge, kitchen/dining area and deck was a delightful place to lounge around reading etc. The kitchen is very well equipped if home eating is one's preference. Sitting on the deck with a glass of wine watching the last rays of the sun hit the summit of Mont Ventoux is an abiding and cherished memory. The main bedroom is very comfortable and the view of Mont Ventoux when one throws open the shutters in the morning is stunning. The whole house is very spacious and well appointed and spotlessly clean. But the best thing is its situation. Villes sur Auzon is a very quiet little place although there are two restaurants within easy walking distance (three if you count the pizzeria nearby which does a great steak frites!). Local shop and boulangerie will take care of your everday needs. The village really scored with us as a base for exploration with typical Provencal villages and towns within easy reach. I think the furthest we travelled was Avignon which only took 45 minutes and that was at rush hour! Particular favourites were Venasque, Roussillon, Vaison la Romaine and L'Isle sur la Sorgue. And of course the Cotes du Rhone Villages area is on the doorstep so leave room in the car to bring some quality wines home! The Cave at Gigondas is worthy of special mention. Our contact in the village was Sylvie who was a charmer - Chantal was away on family business so we didn't get the chance to meet the author of the very friendly emails we exchanged before travelling. All in all, a wonderful house in a fabulous part of the world to which we would love to return and sample life in another season (lavender time must be amazing). I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to anyone wishing to enjoy a more realxed pace of life, great food and fabulous wines. The weather wasn't bad either. Mac and Lorna |
