The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
Surrounding the village are the delightful vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields for which Provence has been renowned through the centuries. Roman remains can be found and in this respect the ancient towns of Vaison La Romaine and Glanum (outside St. Remy de Provence) and the Amphitheatre at Orange are not to be missed.
The elegant historic town of Carpentras, 12 minutes drive away, has chic boutiques, a famous market of local produce, crafts and antiques, an ancient cathedral and synagogue, and many cultural events.
If you want to visit the beach, the classy resort of Cassis is only 90 minutes away, as is the Carmargue resort of Saintes Maries de la Mer. The city of Arles is one hour by car, the ancient port city of Marseille is just over an hour, and Avignon - with its famous Summer festival - can be reached in 40 minutes. Here you should not miss the ancient bridge (made famous in the song), the vast Papal Palace and a river trip up the Rhone.
A couple of days of high culture and history will make your haven of peace in the garden and sunshine of Mormoiron all the more relaxing.
You will find the website about the village of Mormoiron informative.
In the village of Mormoiron are a number of shops and facilities which one would normally need day to day. There is a lively bar, three resaurants, and a good take-away pizza shop. Nearby, at the other end of the village, is a reservoir/lake, with supervised bathing and a large sandy beach with a restaurant and climbing park/adventure playground. Also in the village there is a twice weekly market (Tuesday & Sunday morning) and many cultural events such as concerts, art exhibitions, craft stalls, cinema festival and of course the local wine caves with their opportunities for tasting and purchase.
Nearby are published walking routes for all levels of fitness and ability, cycling, climbing and bird-watching (the garden of Villa Pétrarque attracts at least 20 species of birds and has been designed with ecological ideals).
The neighbouring villages each deserve exploring and hide their particular treasures. Some are extra special from a historical standpoint, such as Venasque or Malaucene, which are only a few kilometres away. Not to be missed are a visit to nearby Mont Ventoux (2000 metres, 6500 feet), the Source of the Vaucluse and the breathtaking Gorge of the Nesque.
