The Cumbria/Lake District

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers.

Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.

Carnforth / Ingleton area

Nestled on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park beneath Ingleborough, one of the famous ‘Three Peaks’, this attractive village offers a wide selection of amenities including shops, pubs and places to eat. With pretty, winding streets centring on a tiny market place, this is an incredibly pretty location though the village is best known for its White Scar Caves which are situated a mile outside of the village on the road to Hawes. These astonishing caves are open to the public and display a dazzling array of stalactites and stalagmites, caverns and a huge underground lake.

The ‘Fall Walk’, which incorporates the impressive cascading waterfalls of the region is close by, adding to a long list of reasons that make this an excellent touring base for those looking to holiday in North Yorkshire.

Guestbook for 1912

"A real five star cottage, excellent wood burner, friendly neighbours and an excellent real ale pub not too far away."
-Mr Taylor, Pontefract, West Yorkshire
March 2009

"Everything in The Barn was top quality and nothing missing. The owner and family, young and old made this a special place."
-Mrs Barrett, Pudsey, West Yorkshire
February 2009

"Very quiet location, a lot of space, modern decor, simply brilliant."
-Mr Drocourt, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear
February 2009

"A superb 5 star accommodation which totally suited our party of 10. The owners were extremely helpful and the touch of leaving wine and a massive homemade cake for us was lovely. Well placed for walking in the dales and also for getting over to the lake district. Loved the wood burner which was lovely to sit in front of after some long (and very cold) walks!"
-Mrs Thurbon, Swadlincote, Leicestershire
December 2008
