The Cumbria/Lake District
What can you say about the Lake District that people don't already know. This is one of the most beautiful places in England with great scenery & many attractions to visit. Visit Wast Water voted Britain's favourite view, take a boat ride on Lake Windermere. Take a ride on the Haverthwaite to Lakeside steam train traversing through the hills. For the more energetic there are fabulous walks for example in Grizedale forest along with Go Ape or water sports on offer. With some fantastic castles including Muncaster & large stately homes such as Levens Hall to visit you could come back to the lakes year after year and discover something new. Visit the lake district tourist information website for a more comprehensive list of activities.
The Lodge has a comprehensive guide of places to visit in the Lakes, Lancashire and Yorkshire Dales to browse at your leisure.
Carnforth is small town but with lots of intresting things to do. The old Railway station has been restored to bring it back to its glory days of steam & this is where Brief Encounter was filmed and houses a heritage centre. You can also enjoy a snack or light bite in the fully restored refreshment room where Laura and Alec first met. It also has an exhibition which shows Carnforth's contribution in the 1st and 2nd world wars.
With Morecambe only a short drive away why not visit the Grade ii listed Victoria Pavillion better known as Morecambe's Winter Gardens or the statue of the towns famous son Eric Bartholomew better known as Eric Morecambe. With a golden sandy beach this will keep the kids amused all day.
Why not visit Historic Lancaster, a beautiful city steeped in history with an incredibly varied shopping hub. From the hustle and bustle of the European Markets to the quiet street cafe's there's always something special round the corner here for you. With it's natural beauty and the cosmopolitan buzz of the streets, Lancaster is a unique, magical place to visit all year round.
Kendal is home to a fine selection of shopping arcades, can boast two castles, two museums, a host of historical buildings and bridges, fine restaurants and a multitude of public houses. Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around 9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding.
