The Cumbria/Lake District region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes – the Lake District landscape has inspired several literary greats, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. Walking is one of the best ways of exploring the Lake District.
For the serious walker the mountains of Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn provide enjoyable challenges, whilst at lower levels there are hundreds of routes wandering among the lakes and stone-walled fields. You can even choose a lake to suit your mood: if bustling lakeside towns and exhilarating watersports take your fancy, then Windermere and Coniston Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. If it’s peace and tranquility you seek then the secluded lakes of Buttermere and Wastwater are not to be missed. Yet Cumbria offers much more than the lakes alone. Explore the National Nature Reserve on Walney Island or visit the picturesque Duddon Valley, where the heather clad moors peppered with birch trees inspired many of Wordsworth’s poems.
With its award-winning gardens and the Lakeland Motor Museum, Holker Hall is also a great day out, whilst in northern Cumbria the peaceful villages of Caldbeck and Ireby offer a haven of solitude and picturesque tranquility. To the east lies the green and sheltered Eden Valley. Its dramatic landscape provides a range of activities including walking, cycling and watersports and is home to the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre and Lowther Wildlife Park, perfect for a family day out
The Carnforth / Burton-in-Kendal area
The small traditional Cumbrian village of Burton is set in beautiful countryside and is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Bowland Forest. With a post office and general store, a butcher and a pub that serves good food, the village has all the essentials for visitors. For more specific amenities, Kirkby Lonsdale is just seven miles away whilst Kendal is only 12 miles and is often referred to as the gateway to the Lake District. The historic city of Lancaster and the seaside resorts of Morecombe and Blackpool are within easy driving distance, whilst the acclaimed RSPB wildfowl reserve of Leighton Moss is only four miles away. Morecombe Bay also offers great opportunities for wildlife spotting and is one of the reasons that the area is famous for birdwatching. Other locations with an hour's drive include the villages of Silverdale and Arnside, which overlook the beautiful Kent Estuary as well as the villages of Ingleton, Settle and Clapham.

,Well it was that good we have booked for 2012! So peaceful, with everything we needed. On the whole, what a cottage. The children loved helping with the chickens and duck and they were rewarded with eggs!
The cottage is in a great place to reach everywhere, just a short drive to other places. The views were amazing and the dog was free in the grounds.
