The West Wales/Pembrokeshire region

Carmathenshire is situated in the heart of South West Wales. Hills and valleys dominate the northen and central areas, with the coastline of beautiful sands to the south, including Cefn sidan, Llansteffan and Pendine. Carmarthenshire is known as the "Garden of Wales" and is home to world class gardens such as the National Botanical Garden of Wales and Aberglasney. Also steeped in history with its fair share of castles and of course the town of Carmarthen has legendary links with King Arthur.

Carmarthen

Llansteffan village, friendly and unspoilt, boasts a beautiful expanse of sandy beach. Llansteffan castle, built in the 12 Century, is a short walk from the beach car park and has splendid views of the Towy estuary. The village has two pubs, one restaurant, a village shop and post office. There is also a café/shop near the beach which offers the usual beach accessories.

The bustling market town of Carmarthen(20mins)offers the usual range of facilities. The National Botanical Gardens, Dynevor castle(National Trust), Aberglasney, Kidwelly Castle, Careg Cennen Castle are all a short drive away to the west. To the east - Dylan Thomas' Boat house, the Museum of Speed at Pendine, and Colby Gardens(National Trust) are all within ½ hour drive away, to name but a few.

"A special place"

We have stayed in Gwalia cottage twice now and plan to return again later this year.

We have been looking for high quality self catering accommodation near to Llanstaffan for some years now, and now we've discovered Gwalia we hope to keep on returning.

The cottage itself is cosy, yet with all modern ammenities and has been done to a very high standard. (We have stayed in Gwalia cottage which has 3 bedrooms and my parents stayed in Hafan which has one bedroom and is just as beautifully appointed.)

The cottages are beautiful but the views are even better. We looked out across the estuary to the village of Llaugharne, and could see Dylan Thomas' boat house from our bedroom and living room. The setting is just so peaceful we've felt so relaxed and whilst here.

There is a cliff top walk down into Scotts bay, which when the tide is in is cut off, and we were the only ones on the beach, or a short drive to llansteffan beach where you can walk around to Scott's bay when the tide is out, or climb up to the castle that perches above the beach.

Some days we just walked in the local area, on other days we had days out to Tenby, Llaugharne beach and Carmarthen town. On previous summer visits, we've been to Caldey Island, St Davids, other Pembroke beaches and Folly Farm when the children were younger.
