The West Wales/Pembrokeshire region

The south coast of Carmarthenshire is pierced by a huge, sword-shaped body of water: the handle sticks into the wide blue of Carmarthen bay, the hilt broadens out into the Taf and Gwendraeth estuaries and the point reaches right up to the county capital of Carmarthen.

Even before the Romans, Carmarthen was a thriving port, and over the centuries it developed industries such as wool, iron and coal. As a result it is dotted with fine castles, houses and industrial sites to prove it, many of which have been converted into museums, restaurants or shops. Add a large rural hinterland, fabulous produce, gorgeous walking country and swooping sandy beaches and - hey presto! - the perfect heritage holiday.
