The Cornwall region
The south coast of Cornwall is more sheltered than the west coast, but the scenery is just as stunning.
It's one of the warmest areas of Britain, even spring comes earlier here.
THE COAST is a striking mix of rugged cliffs and sheltered bays.
Many of the bays are beautiful historic harbours, tiny winding streets with stone fishermen's cottages perched on steep hillsides. These harbours were also famous for smuggling.
There are numerous beaches in the area, mostly sheltered bays with soft pale sand.
INLAND the area was famous for tin mines, and the high peaked remnants of the mines can still be seen as you drive over Bodmin Moor into St Austell. There are also fantastic footpaths on the moors.
The Eden Project uses the site of one of the mines. Not only the largest indoor rain forest in the world, but a pioneer of ecology and education. It also has a music and arts program. Truly a great day out, and only 15 minutes drive.
THE TOWN of St Austell has a thriving local economy, with a large shopping area and lots of parking. A large Tesco's supermarket is 5 minutes drive from the house, and the town only 10 minutes.
Everything you need for the perfect holiday is close by.
Carlyon Bay, named after the Cornish for Fort, was originally know as the New Cornish Riviera.
The Beach is sandy and sheltered in a bay, and about 10 minutes from the house.
Atop the cliffs near the house, fields slope down to dense bushes on the cliff edge, the golf course, and many modern luxury houses, some truly modern mansions.
"Beam Reach" is the second row of homes. Because of the slope, it looks over the roof-tops of the larger mansions and out to sea.
Large trees give great privacy.
Nearby is the Carlyon Bay Golf Club and luxury Hotel. Try it's excellent food or enjoy a bit of pampering in the spar, just a few minutes walk from the house.
The South West Coastal Path crosses the open field atop the cliffs overlooking the bay with spectacular views of the sea.
Heading east, you can walk for miles along the cliffs to the town of Par, and miles beyond.
Heading west, the path is sheltered away from the cliffs as it winds down into the historic village port of Charlestown.
