Keeper's Cottage, a former shooting lodge located in High Grains' farmstead, has been thoughtfully restored and can comfortably accommodate four adults and two children. Such is the high standard that it enjoys official five star rating.

Access is via a well-maintained, two-mile-long, unsurfaced lane. With your own conservatory, garden and sheltered decking area you can enjoy spectacular views to Scotland and the Lakeland fells. Keeper's Cottage is an ideal base from which to explore Hadrian's Wall, the Lakes, and the Scottish Borders, or the perfect spot to simply relax and enjoy the clear Atlantic air.

Few locations can boast of the vast and clear, dark night skies essential for star gazing - we can!

Imagine this. The haunting call of pee-wits, curlews and owls, the beating of snipe and pheasant wings as they rise from cover, the bleating of lambs and the barking of deer. And these, the only sounds that break the soft silence at this retreat in north east Cumbria, in the debatable lands of the Anglo-Scottish borderlands.

Immerse yourself in the warmth and five-star comfort of Keeper's Cottage, Bewcastle, a mile from the nearest neighbour but only nine miles from Brampton, a busy market town.

The Cumbria/Lake District

The warmth of the Gulf Stream from the tropics washes the shores of Cumbria, making it milder and warmer than other places of similar latitude. And maybe that's partly why the Roman empire stretched this far from the Mediterranean. And maybe that's partly why the Roman empire stretched this far from the Mediterranean.

Cumbria encapsulates all the best of Britain in one discrete county. Think about the breathtaking scenery of the mountains and lakes – ideal all year round for walkers, cyclists and scenic drives. Add in the historic connections to Beatrix Potter and her stories of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-duck, the Wordsworth family, John Ruskin, Arthur Ransome author of Swallows and Amazons, Byrne Jones and William Morris. Don't forget the market towns and villages. Include in your stay trips to some of the gastro-pubs and restaurants that draw on the teeming natural wildlife and quality produce of dedicated farmers.

You should even venture over the Anglo-Scottish border into Scotland (only nine miles away from Keeper's Cottage) and steep yourself in the romantic idyll that is Scotland. Ancient castles, abbeys, strongholds of famous clans and all this in the same language as England!

Carlisle

Most visitors spend the first day simply unwinding, enjoying the vast horizons, deep starry skies, fresh Atlantic air and the absence of pavements, or exploring the tranquillity of the Bewcastle valley, often on foot; for there are hundreds of acres of fell land, dotted with ruined pele towers, bastles and sheep folds. By the church is the remarkable seventh century Celtic cross, while for visitors intent on researching border Reiver family history, there is well documented information in the church.

If you need a little indulgent pampering we can arrange special whole or half day treatments in the cottage. Still in the Bewcastle valley there is rewarding bird watching, several SSSIs to explore and a lake, where with a permit, you can fish for trout.

We can arrange horse riding nearby, while within easy reach are several challenging mountain biking circuits. Bewcastle is on the Reivers' cycle route.

Bewcastle is proud of its Roman fort – Hadrian's Wall is an easy 20 minute drive away.

The historic city of Carlisle is only 30 minutes' drive away; it's a similar distance to Gretna Green and the Scottish Border. These borderlands include the romantic border abbeys and many ancient castles and gardens, as well as the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site at Caerlaverock. The splendours of the Lake District are just 60 minutes away.

And if you must obey the call of a city, Edinburgh and Glasgow are under 100 miles away, while Newcastle is less than 40.
