Tanglewood is a 18th century fortified farmhouse. Built in traditional Lakeland style with its thick stone walls, the house and the adjacent buildings were restored in 2000.

The house has been designed with the larger self catering party in mind, with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

The entire house boasts a cosy decor, with bright, spacious rooms with views of the countryside. The kitchen is large and spacious -perfect for serving up hearty meals, while afternoon teas on the terrace taking in the views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Set in splendid walking country - deep in the Cumbrian countryside, the house is surrounded by an area of natural beauty and is steeped in history. Once home to the Border Reivers the house is also on course for Route 7 of the National Cycle Network, the Reivers cycle trail and one of the famous 7Stanes Mountain Bike Trials.

To the east and within striking distance of the house is the gateway to The World Heritage Site - Hadrian's Wall where you will find some of the best preserved stretches of Wall and the famous Coast to Coast footpath as it crosses the country from the small seaside town of St Bees in west Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay on the east coast. The quality and variety of this walk was recognised in 2004, when it was rated the second best walk in the world, beating walks such as, the Inca Trail and Everest Base Camp walk.

The house is ideally placed for exploring the local area and stands within rolling distance of the Scottish border to the north, whilst rubbing shoulders with the historic border city of Carlisle and its 12th century castle to the south. Drive a little further south, with hiking boots and cycling gear eagerly hitched up in tow and bask in the beauties of peaks and puddles of Cumbria's Lake District.

"Beauty all around you"

We had a lovely stay. The barn was warm and cosy and we thoroughly enjoyed our late winter week. We even had some bright sunny days which was an unexpected bonus, and as may bright starry nights. The owners were very helpful and even took time out to bake us some delicious scones during our holiday.Plenty of thing to do but we particularly wanted to explore the history of Hadrians wall and spend time visiting local Towns and villages. I was able to complete my 6K run every morning, Lovely quite lane with just the sound of singing birds and a few horse riders, and I also managed to stroll along the numerous local right of way foot paths on the door step of the property. Our little girl loved being free in a huge secure garden and she was besotted with the alpacas. I think I was a little taken with them myself, they were lovely animals, friendly, very curious and interested in their surrounding and us. We also visited a lovely little village for a picnic near the river close to the barn even though we had to share it with local geese and ducks. This is an unusual property with a huge family kitchen full of character, tasteful decor. All in all a delightful holiday home and a beautiful place to stay.

Thank you for your review. Without doubt you and your family were the ideal guest to have stay at the house. I found the property clean and orderly and I am most grateful to you for taking care and respecting the house. Your whole family is incredibly polite and friendly and clear with communication. Once again 'Thank you' and I look forward to welcoming you back again in the future!

"Beautiful Countryside Location"

I did a lot of internet research to find the perfect place to stay in Cumbria and I think I found it in Tanglewood. If, like me, you value being within striking distance of a totally different experience every day of your holiday, I don't think you could find a better place to stay. Whilst the area is not the liveliest in the world, it's certainly very picturesque, reminiscent of the country springtime I remember as a child. Everything you need is close by, with county pubs, an excellent pizzeria, bakery and supermarket facilities within 15 minutes' drive of the house.
The house itself is perched on top of a hill with great views of the surrounding hills. There's a lovely terrace which overlooks natural ponds that attracts amazing wildlife and the alpacas were a delight to watch. We liked the size of the place - three big bedrooms, of which we only needed two - and spacious, The family bathroom is large and spotlessly clean. It is very obvious the house is very well maintained. The real bonus of this property, though, was the convenience for exploring the local area. With so much to see and do within an hour's drive - we were able to cram more into 8 days than we ever would have imagined. As long as you have a car, you can really explore some undiscovered corners of Cumbria and South of Scotland.
In summary, I can honestly say that I cannot think of any negative points about our holiday at Tanglewood. We had lovely spring weather, with the added bonus of one enormous, beautiful night-time storm, but I can imagine the place being perfect for a holiday in any season and I would love to go back in winter to see the snow. 100% recommended!

Thank you for being such wonderful guests and I would not hesitate to take a booking from you ANY time!! You family was respectful, neat and courteous. I was delighted you and your family made the most of the spectacular recreation opportunities in our region and I hope you return sometime in the future.
