About this location
The Basse-Normandie region
The Normandy region of France combines a 360-mile dramatic coastline, including the World War II landing beaches. With the combinationof beautiful farmland, bustling market towns, and historic landmarks such as the cities of Caen, Bayeux and Rouen there is something for everyone. Enjoy dining in the area trying local cheeses, cider and the famous Calvados.
Landing Beaches: The largest military landing in history took place in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Monuments, museums, bunkers and cemeteries are a living commemoration to the Battle of Normandy. Le Clos Castel is a perfect base from which to tour the beaches.
Bayeux: The town of Bayeux is built around the magnificent Cathedral of Notre-Dame and is home to the 200-foot long Bayeux Tapestry, a world famous masterpiece showing the epic tale of William the Conqueror's expedition to England in the 11th century.
Carentan is called the "Capital des Marais" because of its location at the heart of the marshes. There is a small port devoted entirely to pleasure boating and a selection of restaurants.
On Monday morning it turns into a bustling market town.
It was made famous by the "Band of Brothers" (episode3) television series which depicted the objective of taking Carentan by "Easy Company."
Being just a 10 minute drive from Le Clos Castel it is an ideal stop off whilst visiting.
