The Pays de la Loire region
Carelles is part of the Mayenne region of the Loire, and is a beautiful area to visit.
It is full of pretty villages, lakes, streams, rivers, fields and of course the picturesque Mediaeval towns and Chateaux of Mayenne, Fougeres, Domfront, Vitre, all in easy reach by car.
Fougeres has a large Saturday market, a Land Train, a beautiful Chateau, a man-made sandy beach where you can swim or lead your children round the woods on a Shetland pony and a new outdoor/indoor pool with slides, fountains and wave machine, while Laval has a Golf Course, a railway station and a lively shopping centre.
Mont St Michel is about an hour's drive away, and well worth a visit (and the sea-food, crepes and galettes are delicious).
Le Mans (famous for the 24hour races) has an enchanting Mediaeval town just over an hour away and makes a memorable day trip.
Pontmain (less than half an hour away) is where the Virgin Mary appeared to some local children and is one of the greatest pilgrimage sites in France.
Nantes is a bit further away, but we had a great time there, (see our web-site blog at ' lagrandesalleverte.com ')
We have Clog museums, Cider museums, art galleries, abbey ruins, Basilicas and gardens to visit.
We could go on, but why not come and discover it for yourself?
Our region of France is usually a few degrees warmer than the South of England, and early Spring and late Autumn are often very mild, making it ideal for off-season breaks.
We live in the countryside on the edge of Carelles village. About 200 yards away is the village itself and the Bar/Restaurant that also acts as the village shop, where you can buy essentials and locally made bread, or have a mid-day meal or just a hot chocolate or a Pastis.
Farming, cider and Calvados make up the way of life around here, and as a result, there are lots of restaurants in the area serving good food (with wine and cider usually included in the price) for around 11 euros
The slow pace of life is what makes a holiday here so relaxing. Walking and cycling is easy because the back roads are so quiet, and fishing is popular with a lake just down the road from us and many more lakes and rivers to choose from.
Children are not forgotten- Fougeres has a large Aqua Centre with flumes and wave-pools, and Gorron has tree-top walks and canoeing.
Autumn is a lovely time to visit, the trees in the quiet lanes are laden with sweet chestnuts, so collect a bag full and roast them on the barbeque! In October, don't forget to visit the pumpkin festival just down the road- there is usually a pig roast, children's games and lots of pumpkin soup and pies to sample! (see our photos at lagrandesalleverte.com)
At Christmas you will be warm and cosy in the cottage, but come outside and visit the Christmas markets, try hot chestnuts, mulled wine and ice-skating at Laval or take a car ride round the beautiful illuminated villages.
And why not pick a few sprigs of mistletoe from the orchard to take back to the cottage with you!
In Spring, the lanes are full of primroses, violets and catkins, you might see baby calves and lambs being born, and birds nesting in the barns!
Our village fete is always the first Sunday in July. Its a fun day for everyone. We have dancers and bands from all over the world and local floats, Miss France and her attendants all going through the village streets, with refreshment tents and sit-down meals, and in the evening a cabaret. The whole village is closed off for the day. It's definitely a day not to be missed!
Summertime is a time to relax and let the world go by. Splash in the outdoor pool, have a leisurely game of petanques, a barbeque or potter down to collect some eggs. If that sounds too quiet for you, try tree-top walking or canoeing in near-by Gorron, or swimming or 10 pin bowling in Fougeres.
Your holiday can be as busy or relaxed as you want - come and see!

"Fab fortnight in a lovely part of France"
We stayed at La Grande Salle Verte in August 2013 as a party of three including our 14 year old daughter. We had a lovely relaxing holiday and Angela, John and Selina were wonderful hosts. The gite is excellently equipped and our daughter was delighted by her bedroom. She also loved feeding the goats and playing with the chickens, ducks and rabbits. We had a lovely night at a local ferme auberge - there are plenty of eating places in the region. Our favourite town was Fougeres but there are lots to explore. Lastly Angela’s cooking is really really good - at least as good as dining out - and as John will confirm her Tiramisu is to die for!
Thank you for your lovely review! It was great getting to know you and we are so pleased you really enjoyed your stay.
