The Pays de la Loire region
There are numerous towns and villages close by that offer the opportunity for interesting visits including Mayenne, Laval, Pontmain, Vitré, Lassay Les Châteaux and Ambrières to name just a few. The medieval town of Fougères is well worth exploring and has a market every Saturday. It is only a 25 minute drive away on the Brittany border and there is a lovely lakeside beach in the Fougères forest which is also a good location for walking and cycling and is very handy if you don't want to travel to the coast.
Laval in the south of the department has a golf course, as does Bagnoles de l'Orne to the east. It takes about an hour to get to St. Mont Michel and other coastal towns such as St Malo, and there are many days out for the family including zoos and water parks within a 45 minute radius. The climate here is generally much warmer than the UK and the area is beautiful in every season.
This area is blessed with quiet country lanes so it's an ideal place for cycling and walking. The Jardins des Renaudies is situated five minutes down the road at Colombiers du Plessis where they have a full diary of activities for the summer organised through the Mayenne tourist board. Fishing is popular in this area and there are plenty of places to fish with a licence.
There is a fete in the village the first weekend in July each year which is a fabulous event. The village has a bar and restaurant which serves lunchtime food with a small shop attached where you can buy fresh bread. There is also a Farm Auberge on the edge of the village where you can enjoy home reared food.
