The West Wales/Pembrokeshire region
You will be spoilt for choice for beaches and hidden coves in Ceredigion as there are over 16 beaches. Sandy beaches at Mwnt, Aberporth, Tresaith and Penbryn are ideal for bathing or simply lazing and are child friendly. The beaches further north near Aberystwyth have a mixture of shingle and sandy beaches; some are popular for wind sports and surfing. The local beaches are safe and clean and in 2011 the UK Seaside Award was awarded to 14 beaches in Ceredigion. These include Aberporth, Mwnt, Penbryn, Llangranog,
New Quay, Tresaith, Borth, Aberystwyth North, Aberystwyth South and New Quay. The county is good for many outdoor activities like fishing, sailing, canoeing, walking and Dolphin spotting.Cardigan Bay is well known for dolphin spotting which takes place throughout the
year. The best places to spot dolphins are at the beaches of Mwnt, llangranog and Newquay or by boat trips. Dolphins are best bserved on days when the sea is calm, as they are much easier to spot then. New Quay harbour is home to the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre which has information about the flora and fauna of these shores. A boat trip from the harbour takes around four hours and Bottlenose Dolphins are regularly seen on these trips as well as other wildlife.
Administered by the National Trust, Mwnt is one of the most beautiful coves on the Ceredigion coast. Ideal for families, with sheltered and safe bathing. It is in a truly lovely location, as the accompanying pictures show.
For sunbathing, this is the best beach on the whole coast, for it acts as a natural suntrap. If you have small children, plenty of Rock Pools to explore and the sand is clean and ideal for sand castle building! Swimming is safe " if you keep within the bay (It"s not life guarded) The rocks on the edge of the adjacent headland are very popular with sea anglers. (Mackerel, Bass, Pollack & eels abound)
