The South Wales / Cardiff/Newport/Glamorgan region
Traditionally Monmouthshire was a border county sometimes administered from Wales sometimes England, but often independent. Its frontier heritage leaves its mark with a Roman Amphitheatre, more medieval castles than any other county and the only surviving fortified bridge in the world. The rolling lush landscape of the East and South contrast with the industrial valleys where iron and coal were won deep below the surface.
Moving further West into Glamorgan Merthyr is considered the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the ironworks at Blaenavon are now an World Hertitage site. Cardiff became the largest coal exporting port in the world . Along with this it became a major embarkation point for the emigrants who were to seek a better life in the New World.
Now the industrial scars of the Vallies have healed and Cardiff docks have been regenerated into a vibrant bay and leisure area. A number of beaches lie within reach on the Glamorgan coast, and hills and mountains are only a short drive away towards Brecon.
This area really is worth exploration whether city or country beach or mountain there really is something for all people in all weathers.
