The Lake Maggiore region

Lake Maggiore is the most westerly of the three large lakes of Italy and the second largest after Lake Garda.

It is 54 km in length, upto 12 km's wide and runs from Switzerland to Italy. This allows you the freedom of seeing two beautiful countries within easy reach of Appartamento San Carlo.

Lake Maggiore has lots of charm, is less glitzy than Como, less crowded than Garda, and is a refreshing natural experience. The capital of the area, Stresa, however, is where the fantastical and the grandiose rule.

Stresa's main sqaure is very elegant with numerous restaurants surrounding it, where you can people watch and enjoy some real home-made Italian food. The restaurants are of high standard and very competative in price.Leading off the main square are cute cobbled lanes lined with bars, restaurants, tourist shops, clothes shops, etc.

The promenade consists of wide avenues of trees and flowerbeds and gives you a panoramic view of the Borromeo islands and the surrounding mountains.

The Borromeo islands consist of three small islands called respectively: Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori.

You can visit the islands by boats and water taxis. There are an abundance of restaurants on the islands, where you can dine on fresh fish caught from the lake and get a different perspective on the beautiful countryside.

Boat trips

Lake Maggiore has three small islands to visit and plenty of great little towns dotted around, such as Intra, which can be reached by boat. The nearest port is situated about five minutes walk down from Appartamento San Carlo at Carciano.

There are numerous others ports within close vicinity where you can embark and extend your choice of destination. The most popular trips are to the small islands of Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre. All three islands are uniquely beautiful and though small have plenty to offer with numerous cafes, bars, restaurants, sights and beautiful gardens on.

outdoor pursuits:

Mountain bike and road bike hire, 2 Hotel swimming pools to use 5 minutes walk away (15 euro a day inc lounger), Adventure Park, Alpine Golf, Beach Resorts, Bungee Jump in Verzasca Dam (one hour away),

Cable Car, Excursions, Fishing, Horse riding, Sailing lessons, Hiking trips, Free climbing trips, , Lake Orta (30 minutes away), Markets, Walks, Zoological Park

There are two local ski resorts, Domobianca and Mottarone:

Domobianca ski resort takes around 30-40 minutes to drive to. Follow directions to Gravellona then take the motorway (E62) northbound towards Domodossola. You will eventually see brown signs for Domobianca ski resort, which lead you directly into the resort. Domobianca is for intermediates to advanced levels and is where the Italian Ski team train.

Mottarone ski resort can be reached by either the cable car, by the Lake, or by driving directly into the resort. Both take about 20 minutes. Once you reach Mottarone by cable car there is about a ten minute walk to the resort. Driving takes you through the National Park, which will cost around 5 euros. For directions from Stresa follow signs for Gignese, from there you will see Mottarone signposted. The resort is aimed at beginners to intermedate levels.

About an hour away:

"Excellant value for money couples hideaway close to the lakes and mountains."

This appartment is perfect for two abd such good value for money. We were so comfortable there we spent most evenings enjoying the tranquility of the sppartment, cooking in the well accesorised kitchen, watching DVDs, sleeping alot...just what we needed. Then we spent the days walking by the lake and in.the mountains beautiful. So with regards to stresa-there is plenty to do even at this time of year but although the lake buses and buses are running i would advise a car if you want to visit the mountains. cable car not running and some parts of the islands closed at this time of year. perhaps we just did not know where to go but it definately wasnt a good place to go if you want a new years eve party, very quiet although the fireworks over the lake were beautiful.

"A great apartment representing excellent value for money"

This apartment is a short distance from the main drag in Stresa but is still very close at only 15 minutes walk from the town centre. It has a Carrefour local shop and post office on the door step and the neighbourhood is very nice. The apartment itself is clean and well presented with good decor throughout. There is also a useful back courtyard which is great for eating out in and sun bathing. There is a Scottish lady who lives nearby who is able to offer assistance with any queries and she was very helpful to us. All in all a very good apartment at a very reasonable price.

"Dishonest - Exaggerated Facilities With Uncontrolled Black Mould"

I suppose we might have known better dealing with an absentee landlord, as there were plenty of excuses for such detestable conditions. I feel sorry for Brenda, his cleaning lady and site manager who is a wonderful woman and a charming representative, but without the accountability to correct some basic issues. I notice some action has already been taken based on updated photos on this web site attempting to address some of my concerns. They certainly show the apartment looking cleaner than when we arrived, but the full black mould problem can not be addressed with a can of paint and there is far more than what was in the bathroom. In fact there was: • Significant black mould on the walls in the bathroom which had clearly been painted over at least once previously • Mould in the shower grout lines and around the bathroom sink • Significant black mould on the bedroom wall behind the dinning table, yes the dinning table is stored in the bedroom and yes there is significant mould just a couple of feet from your head when you are sleeping • Stink due to plumbing failure around foot bath causing leakage into living room • Brown, dried urine stains covering the heat radiator in the bathroom • No functioning television, as would be assumed by identified general facilities, due to no connection to satelite or cable service which Brenda said has either never been connected or not connected for over a year • A refridgerator perched on top of the washing machine that is unable to keep meat and cheese chilled, never mind a cold beer • No basic fan to provide some air circulation when the temperature was hitting high 20’s outside. Can’t imagine what it would be like in the middle of summer. • Old, used and dirty personal items (including toothbrush, shaving cream, denture cream, contact lense cleaning solution, cologne, tooth floss. etc.) in a dirty little plastic red bathroom medicine cabinet in an already tiny bathroom with no storage space to place a shaving kit or womens cosmetic bag • Non functioning smoke alarm in bedroom • Did not return damage deposit for over a month Despite wanting to turn around and walk out the Friday evening that we arrived, we didn’t move out until the following Tuesday morning as it took a while to find alternative accomodations, especially on a suprisingly hot mid Septmeber weekend and working around tours that we had already booked. Despite all of this, Carciano is an amazing, charming little town, well situated in close proximity to all that you need to enjoy your stay on Lake Maggiore. Beware of misleading and fabricated reviews. We stayed there September 16th to 20th 2011. There are better alternatives. This property is exaggerated even worse on the site where it is said to have air conditioning, 4 ring stove, Clothes dryer, Dish washer, Freezer, Fridge, Microwave, Oven, Washing machine. Some one needs to stop such dishonesty. We are from Canada and as other travellers do, when travelling from a far, we need to have confidence that a property is adverised accurately. We have used for a few other property rentals and they have always met our expectations.

I am furious with this review. I would just like to state that this man phoned me from Stresa and complained. I was shocked and told him that as I was going over in the next two days and I would take a look as he said "he wouldn't have kept a dog in the place". Upon arrival I found the apartment in a clean, respectable state. I find it strange that he checked in on Friday and it took him until Tuesday to move out, so it couldn't have been that horrendous. He visited in mid to late September which is by no means high season and could have found another place easily. It was if he wanted a 5 star hotel for the price of a cheap self-catering apartment. The last thing I want to do is provide a poor service. I try my upmost to make stays at my apartment as stress free as possible, informing visitors of everything. I am happy to refund people if they have problems but unfortunately not in this case as I found the apartment in a good state. • There were patches of black mould on the bathroom ceiling (which has been cleaned up now). This was due to no extractor fan and a gradual build up over the summer of people showering. It hasn't been painted over. I will be going over to have an extractor fan installed early January 2012. • The dining table is in the bedroom for people to sit and have their breakfast by the open doors (as shown in the photos and video), i'm not hiding anything. • I was not aware of black mould behind the dining table. When I was over I noticed this. This will also be addressed in January 2012. • I didn't seen any mould in the grout • I have re-siliconed around the bathroom sink as it looked discoloured - purely due to the age of the old silicon. There was no mould there. • Brenda and I were not aware of an issue with the BEEDAY. On closer inspection it is blocked and has caused a leak, resulting in a section of damp coming through to the living area. This is on the fix list for January 2012. • The bathroom radiator has spots of rust on it (as it is a very old traditional radiator), NOT URINE • I agree that I do need to have the TV sorted out, again on my list for January 2012. • The fridge is positioned on the washing machine - as shown in the photos. • Regarding the fan, I will look into this and purchase one for Spring 2012 • If someone has left "shaving cream, contact lens cleaning solution, etc" I really do not see the problem, if it is that offensive you could simply placed it in the bin, THIS WILL NOT KILL YOU. • The cabinet is retro but there is plenty of room on top, or inside to store your toiletries. I am sorry if the cabinet is not to your particular taste. • The smoke alarm battery had obviously just died as the previous visitors had not heard the beeping. I CANNOT BE IN CONTROL OF WHEN BATTERIES DIE. I changed the battery and the alarm is working perfectly well now. • The late return of the deposit was due to these particular visitors continuing on their travels and not due back to their home until early October. I have since returned their deposit. I truly believe that this particular visitor was looking for a 5 start accommodation – maybe what they have previously been used to? I either have already or am going to be addressing all of his points in January 2012. I am dedicated to providing clean, tidy and traditional accommodation for all of my visitors and am very disappointed to have such feedback. As I live in England I cannot be available to sort out minor issues immediately and Brenda is on hand to provide a meet and greet and cleaning service on my behalf (not maintenance). I take all comments seriously and always try to inform my visitors about every aspect of their stay. I hope that my response has shown any prospective visitors that I do aim to provide an honest, first class service and the reality that I am offering a low cost, self-catering holiday apartment. If you have any questions relating to this, please feel free to contact me.

"Excellent apartment right in amongst the locals"

Lovely one bedroomed apartment with a small functional kitchen, perfect for a night in cooking. Nice walk from the centre to the apartment. Couldn't have asked for a better apartment to spend time in Stresa.

"Great 'village' location on the edge of Lake Maggiore and Stresa"

A comfortable apartment for two. On the outskirts of he Stresa - about 15 minutes lakeside walk to the centre. Carcione is a small friendly community - excellent local shop with friendly staff and nearby bar/lunch places if you don't want to go into town. Lakeside boats 5 minutes away which give access to all routes/towns on Lake Maggiore. Definitely go to Locarno in Switzerland - a great cruise. Local markets all around the Lake on different days. Good restaurants and excellent ice cream in Stresa. Slow down and relax in Appartamento San Carlo.

"Pictures were misleading."

The apartment was under street level. The walls were mouldy partly.Pictures were not truthful. They all were taken in a same room. The so called "kitchen" was only a little space in a "so called livingroom". Landlord was very pleasant and that´s why it´s very diffidult to say the apartment was not so good.

The apartment is a ground floor apartment, not a basement. I will have to look at the mould situation immediately, i was not aware of that. It is only a kitchenette, it is a small area but workable, which is part of the living room.i do state that the apartment is only 35sqm's The photos are true to form with the exception that i have now changed the layout. As i am going out there this week i will look into all this and update website accordingly with photos and look into the mould.
