The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region

The ancient medieval town of Carcsès stands on the hill where the waters of the Argens and Caramy rivers meet, in the heart of Var region, at 115m above sea level, between the Provençal Alps and the Mediterranean beaches. It is a typical small Provençal town, sleepy in winter and lively in summer, with a population of around 3,000, surrounded by pine woods and picturesque hills. Every year, the area attracts numerous nature lovers, thanks to its striking scenery, shaded edges of its rivers, and many walking and cycling paths. Carcès traces its history back to 11th century, when the first lords of Carcès, the Châteaurenards, built the fort on the site in the year 1000.
But the village got particularly famous in the second half of 16th century during The French Wars of Religion. These wars were a series of conflicts fought between the Catholic League and the Huguenots from the middle of the sixteenth century to the Edict of Nantes in 1598. They began with a massacre of 30 Huguenots at Vassy on March 1, 1562.
Charles IX’s journey in Provence in 1567, followed by the establishment in the parliament at Aix of a court (chambre) in which Catholics and Protestants had an equal number of seats, led to a momentary cessation of hostilities. Louis XIV and his court stayed in the village in 1660 when on pilgrimage of the area. The castle, which accommodated him, was destroyed during the Second World war, and only the ruins remain today.
In 1792, August 4, under the patronage Vicomte de Barras de Fox-Amphoux, the patriotic Company "the friends of freedom and the legality" established in a room of "Under-city", the part of the village under the fort; starting from this act, Carcès will become a high place of the French revolution. In 1793, this company will be transformed into "revolutionary club", and the revolutionary commands of the mountain were registered on its walls.
The Carces area
The freshwater lake (Lac de Carcès) provides clean water for the town of Toulon. Although swimming is not allowed, the lake is famous for pike, crayfish and trout fishing. Licence is required to fish in the lake (information on how to get a license is on request. Alternatively, look on our website). There is another small lake nearby where swimming is permitted.
Close to several golf courses. Barbaroux Golf Club only 10 miles away. Saint-Endreol Golf Club, Fregate Golf Club, Le Parc du Golf Saint-Jean are also nearby. Castles, abbeys, chapels, museums, even a Russian monastery nearby.

Guestbook for Villa Près du Lac
June 2006
First off, may I say what a fantastic villa you have. The information provided, amenities and decor were perfect. The pool area in particular was excellent. Not only for the view of course, but the design was very clever: Plants were picturesque but not so close as to encourage insects in the pool, the ground never got too hot, and the pool was large enough for swimming and diving. Lots of beautiful butterflies, and hardly any wasps or mosquitoes. My parents were in the area and popped round, and were also extremely impressed, and rather jealous!
We both agreed that it has been by far the best villa all round that we have ever stayed at.

We had an absolutely wonderful time in your villa last week, thanks for
everything! The villa is beautiful and obviously the setting is idyllic, we
had a very relaxing time and spent most of the week in the pool or in the
outdoor dining area. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a
villa to rent in the south of France.

We had the most wonderful time at your house, it is so peaceful and relaxing it is a credit to you, we were so sad when we had to come home.
Thanks Again
September 2006
We honestly cannot think of anything that would improved your villa or our holiday. It was the best holiday we have had by far. The only thing I can think of is for you to grow a tree over the gravelled area outside the covered terrace where the barbecue is located. This would provide a cooler shade than the roof as it would absorb rather than reflect the sun's energy. (Even better would be two or more trees positioned so that hammock(s) could be slung, but that's just being greedy!) I must emphasise that I mention this only because you asked and that I struggled to come up with it, even then - there was nothing whatsoever about the villa that dissatisfied us in any way.
Whilst on the subject of being satisfied, we would like, if it is possible, to book the villa again next August, this time for 3 weeks! This is quite a departure for us. We usually think about our holiday only at the last minute and never during the previous calendar year. We have also never been anywhere more than once, so you can see that we really did have a good time!

We had a lovely week - very restful to look out on such a beautiful view!
August 2007
Just a brief note to thank you for what was a wonderful holiday and a fantastic villa. It is a great location and the weather was also excellent. Thanks also for the work in putting together the guide to the area - much appreciated.
September 2007
Thanks! We had a great time in your great villa and are really jealous, I couldn't keep my mother out of the pool. I was especially pleased to fined some one else who liked Science fantasy books even though I had read them all before.
We will be deciding in the new year on holidays for next year so if we decide on France again we will defiantly be in touch.
