BookThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
This region is steeped in medieval History and the Cathars. Mountains, gorges, rivers, canals and plenty of wildlife. Chic shopping in Toulouse and Montpellier or bird watching a few hundred metres away in the dried up salt lake known as the Etang. Mild winter climate averaging around 12C in Dec / Jan and a hot and sunny 30C in July / August.
This is still a very authentic, rustic and unpretentious part of southern France with friendly, hospitable locals.
The Carcassonne / Marseillette area
Carcassonne. The medieval walled city dates back to the 6th Century. It has 52 towers and 2 miles of ramparts and is still inhabited to this day. Narrow streets offer a vast selection of shops and eateries. The city has been the setting for several films including Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. The place comes alive in Summer especially in July when they have the Music Festival and you can find different types of music / acts dotted around the city and performing in the outdoor theatre.
Marseillette is approx 15 Kms from Carcassonne offering a typical village alongside the canal with a Boulangerie, Bar/Tabac, Post Office, Restaurant/Hotel, Hairdresser. Walk alongside the canal or sit on the benches in the shade and watch the boats go by. Ideal location to base yourself to visit the many local attractions in the region. The gite has lots of local information brochures. Walk through the vineyards or wander down into the etang (dried up salt lake) and see the apples, melons, vines and rice growing.

Canal view cottage is a clean, well equiped cottage in a fantastic area of France. Pauline and Ken are wonderfully, friendly and helpful hosts. The lock in front of the house is busy and it is fun to watch the novices trying to negotiate it! The village of Marseillette is quiet but does have a bar and the cakes at the boulangerie are simply delicious. Next to Canal View is a small hotel where you can eat- great for convenience. There are many interesting places to visit nearby- our favourites were Carcassonne and Narbonne. |

Fantastic home from home with everything you need for a great holiday. Warmly met by Ken & Pauline on arrival and they were on hand if needed. Excellent location for watching the boats on the canal. A short drive from Carcssonne with lots of restaurants. Within easy reach of Andorra, Barcelona and plenty beaches. Would definitely come back if in this area again. |
