The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

With its Mediterranean climate, mountains, lakes, long open stretches of sandy beaches, fairytale villages, vineyards, golf, fishing, skiing, canoeing, good food & wine, markets, lots of history and friendly laid back atmosphere, Languedoc has something to offer for everyone. It is the new Provence, but without the crowds. And whilst you are here, why not take a relaxing drive into Spain, after all it is only a day trip away. Languedoc is the biggest wine region in the world with vineyards as far as the eye can see so spend some time sampling the local wines.
The Carcassonne / Conques-sur-Orbiel area
The village
Conques-sur-Orbiel is located just outside Carcassonne - 10 minutes drive. The village has a post office, cashpoint, food store (with cheese and meat counter), newsagent, a bakery, public swimming pool & tennis court, a pizzeria, a restaurant and a cafe all within walking distance. A large supermarket is only five minutes drive and the village gets once a week visits from the dairy farmer, butcher and fish monger. There is also a stream for fishing.
To see and do
Visit the medieval citadel of Carcassonne. Explore Cathar castles - Chateau de Peyreperteuse perhaps the most impressive. Visit one of the many lovely historical villages - Minerve, Mirepoix, Rennes-le-Château. Take a trip to Collioure - an old beautiful fishing port with a castle, art galleries, shops and good restaurants
For everything from food to jewellery, visit one of the many local markets - Carcassonne, Limoux, Narbonne, Mirepoix. The are many good restaurants in the area. For a reasonable priced meal, we can recommend La Courtine located at 4 Place Marcou, La Cité, Carcassonne and for something special Domaine Gayda 11300 Brugairolles and A la Prise d’Alzeau near Lacombe.
Swim in the thermal swimming pool at Rennes-les-Bain or head off to Lake Cavayere or Lac du Montagne. Bring a picnic, rent a canoe and gently paddle on Canal-du-Midi. Build sand castles at one of the many beautiful beaches in the area.
For the children and the young at heart - Go gokarting, visit Australia Park, Meze Dinosaur Park and Réserve Africaine de Sigean - one of Europe's largest wild animal parks.
Play golf at nearby course in Carcassonne, explore Canal du Midi by renting a bike, strolling along its banks, by taking a guided boat trip or why not go fishing. If you like walking and hiking, there are many lovely tracks in the area. In winter, go for a day trip to the nearby ski slopes.
There are a number of events throughout the year in Carcassonne: April - Jazz week . July - Festival of the Cité and Festival of the Bastide - opera, dance, theatre and music events. The Cité set ablaze – Fireworks on the night of 14 July. August - Spanish Week. December - the Magic of Christmas.

We booked a week in France last minute and were extremely lucky to find the hidden gem that is maison d'annelli. The house is very well equipped and conveniently located to allow exploration of the wonderful region. La cite is less than 15 minutes away as is the airport. We spent the week travelling around and found some beautiful villages in the area. On our last day we found lac de cavayere which is only around 5 minutes from La Cite - a perfect location for enjoying a good book and a picnic. We will definitely be recommending the house to our friends and family! |

Our family of two adults and two teenage girls stayed at La maison d'anneli for a week in August. Our booking was made through the holidaylettings website. Carina, the owner, was a pleasure to deal with, she was friendly and she responded quickly to all queries. She provided lots of local information via email before we traveled and there is an extensive information pack in the house for use by guests. The house is on three levels. Living area/utility/toilet on the ground floor with a en-suite bedroom on each of the upper floors. It is spotlessly clean with plenty of towels. Carina and James have equipped this house as you would your own home. The kitchen has everything you need. The furnishings are comfortable and of good quality with lots of nice decorative touches throughout. All the necessities are here plus many extras. There is satellite TV with all the English channels, DVD player with movies, wifi, picnic accouterments etc. If you are traveling with a baby or toddler this house has all you need including a small nursery off the first floor bedroom. The bedrooms are very spacious and bright with large en-suite bathrooms. The bedrooms sleep up to seven people (sofa bed and cot) comfortably. The living area is not so large and is perfect for four. The weather was very hot 35C+ during our stay and the house did tend to heat up during the day. There are free standing fans in all the rooms, with the fans on and open windows we could cool the house at night, as the temperature drops significantly. The courtyard is a lovely place to sit on a summer's evening. The Cite in Carcassonne is a great place for dinner at night, it is very atmospheric and overflowing with restaurants. Carcassonne plage is a great place for kids, good safe swimming, climbing center with zip-lining, crazy golf and more. The square in Mirepoix is a nice spot for a coffee or a drink. |

Guestbook for La maison d'anneli
• "We had a lovely week staying in the maison d'anneli. Thank you for all your help with the booking and all the useful information you provided (particularly the tip about heading out to the motorway service stations for basic provisions on the Sunday). The house is located in a really beautiful area - we'd never been in rural France so late in the year before, and the vineyards look really stunning with all of their autumn colours. The house is beautifully furnished and also very well equipped, in particular in the kitchen." - Sarah, Steve and Abigail, England (2 adults, 1 child)
• “We enjoyed your house, from viewing it on the internet I had been looking forward excitedly to the experience and it certainly didn't disappoint. We loved our bedrooms and your artistic touches were to be seen all round. All four of us revelled in the comfortable luxury of your home in Conques and we look forward to revisiting it again. There was a touch of ‘a day in Provence’. The local community couldn't have been more hospitable and answered any questions we had with vigour and enthusiasm. We have been waxing lyrically about the house to many friends and would hope some of them will visit.”- Mary and Patrick Flynn, Ireland (4 adults)
• “We had a very pleasant stay at la maison d’anneli. The house is very well equipped and nicely decorated. We felt like at home. All was perfect! We particularly appreciated buying our croissants each morning at the boulangerie next corner of the house! We surely recommend your house to our friends and family.” - Francine et Jacques , Montreal, Canada (2 adults)
• “We just wanted to let you know that we had a great time this week in Conques. We have stayed in many gites and holiday houses over the years, but yours was definitely one of the best equipped, a real home away from home”.- Catherine Roberts, Paris (2 adults)
“We had a great time staying at the maison. It really is a lovely place and very well equipped. I have already recommended it to several friends.” - Terry Beard, Australia (5 adults, 1 child)
“Dear Carina, Thank you for the beautiful card and bottle of wine. We had a wonderful time. The entire week was a wonderful celebration with our children. Your beautiful house was the perfect place to relax and enjoy our time together. Thank you again.” - Marianne and Keith Power, Florida, USA (2 adults, 3 grown-up children – celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary)
“We had a lovely stay at your house and it was gorgeous, very clean and we enjoyed going back to it, after our days out. The locals were friendly and the information about the area really very helpful. We used the swimming pool and tennis court in the village most days at some point.” - Valerie McGrogan, Scotland (2 adults, 3 children)
