The Languedoc-Roussillon region

With its Mediterranean climate, mountains, lakes, long open stretches of sandy beaches, fairytale villages, vineyards, golf, fishing, skiing, canoeing, good food & wine, markets, lots of history and friendly laid back atmosphere, Languedoc has something to offer for everyone. It is the new Provence, but without the crowds. And whilst you are here, why not take a relaxing drive into Spain, after all it is only a day trip away. Languedoc is the biggest wine region in the world with vineyards as far as the eye can see so spend some time sampling the local wines.

Carcassonne

The village

Conques-sur-Orbiel is located just outside Carcassonne - 10 minutes drive. The village has a post office, cashpoint, food store (with cheese and meat counter), newsagent, a bakery, public swimming pool & tennis court, a pizzeria, a restaurant and a cafe all within walking distance. A large supermarket is only five minutes drive and the village gets once a week visits from the dairy farmer, butcher and fish monger. There is also a stream for fishing.

To see and do

Visit the medieval citadel of Carcassonne. Explore Cathar castles - Chateau de Peyreperteuse perhaps the most impressive. Visit one of the many lovely historical villages - Minerve, Mirepoix, Rennes-le-Château. Take a trip to Collioure - an old beautiful fishing port with a castle, art galleries, shops and good restaurants.

For everything from food to jewellery, visit one of the many local markets - Carcassonne, Limoux, Narbonne, Mirepoix. The are many good restaurants in the area. For a reasonable priced meal, we can recommend La Courtine located at 4 Place Marcou, La Cité, Carcassonne and for something special Domaine Gayda 11300 Brugairolles and A la Prise d'Alzeau near Lacombe.

Swim in the thermal swimming pool at Rennes-les-Bain or head off to Lake Cavayere or Lac du Montagne. Bring a picnic, rent a canoe and gently paddle on Canal-du-Midi. Build sand castles at one of the many beautiful beaches in the area.

For the children and the young at heart - Go gokarting, visit Australia Park, Meze Dinosaur Park and Réserve Africaine de Sigean - one of Europe's largest wild animal parks.

Play golf at nearby course in Carcassonne, explore Canal du Midi by renting a bike, strolling along its banks, by taking a guided boat trip or why not go fishing. If you like walking and hiking, there are many lovely tracks in the area. In winter, go for a day trip to the nearby ski slopes.

There are a number of events throughout the year in Carcassonne: May - Jazz week. 19 June to 3 Aug - Festival of the Cité and Festival of the Bastide - opera, dance, theatre and music events. The Cité set ablaze – Fireworks on the night of 14 July. August - Spanish Week. December - the Magic of Christmas.

"Beautiful house in a lovely French village"

Carina, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. She sent us lots of information via email, and gave us some really good ideas of things to do in the region. There were also plenty of guides in the house, which proved very helpful.

The house was very clean and ideal for us as it has all the amenities for a baby/toddler. The house is on 3 levels, with a bedroom with en-suite bathroom on each floor - again ideal for us as we were spending a week with my husband and in-laws! It has some outside space (great for a toddler) and a bbq that we used every evening.

It's located in a lovely small village with great little shops - we enjoyed our daily trips to the boulangerie, butcher and Proxi! People there were very friendly.

The region is beautiful and there is lots to do - lakes, beaches, vineyards, Carcassonne, beautiful villages etc.

We would definitely recommend the house.

"Beautiful home in a perfect location"

La maison d'anneli is a beautiful and well equipped property situated in a lovely, quaint village and it couldn't be more perfect! I recently spent a blissful two weeks there with family and when we weren't sightseeing and enjoying the sunshine at the local lake we had a perfect time relaxing and enjoying lovely food and wine in the courtyard at the maison.

The interior of the property is really lovely with huge, light and airy bedrooms with en-suites which made our stay even more comfortable. The courtyard lovely and sunny throughout the day and the grapevine, plants and flowers made it even prettier.

The owners, Carina and James, provided so much information on things to do and see in the area and I was really impressed with the efficiency of communication throughout. Would definitely like to return in the future!

"Lovely house in quiet village"

We had a great stay at la maison. The house is nice, perfect for a small family for a week. Very handy to have a dishwasher and washing machine. The bedrooms in the house in particular are lovely. Unfortunately the weather we had wasn't great and by the time the sun came out late in the afternoon the courtyard was in the shade, later in the year it would be lovely to sit out there. The village has several bakeries for the morning croissants and a well stocked local shop. The local pizza shop was pretty handy too. The house is within easy reach of lots of lovely old villages, ruins etc which were nice to visit - and obviously carcassonne!

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. I am pleased your family had a lovely stay. Shame about the weather; this means you just have to come again, as it is glorious when the sun is out.
All the best,
Carina

"Lovely Maison in a fabulous location."

We found this gem last minute and it was just perfect; we loved the French village and the ease of access to vineyards, castles, beaches and mountains. The maison is just perfect; it is absolutely the best equipped property that I have been in and it is really beautiful. It was early Spring when we were here but I can imagine in summer it would be even more perfect to be able to sit in the courtyard one evening. Carina is an amazing hostess; attention to detail is impeccable; lots of great recommendations. We will definitely visit again.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are so pleased you had a lovely stay in our house and hope you have a chance to experience the area in summer time or early autumn. Many thanks, Carina

"Great house, great location"

Carina and James are excellent hosts, they provided lots of information about the house and the area and were extremely helpful. The house was great, ideal for couples or a family. The nearby restaurant was very good and in walking distance if you don't want to cook. The location was perfect, away from the city centre but close enough to beaches, mountain lakes and Carcassonne centre. A car is definitely required.

"Great little French hideaway in the middle of wine country"

We stayed at the Maison d'Annelli for two weeks in July/August 2012 and another couple visited us over the middle weekend. We found the house to be exactly as described and ideal for our purposes, which were to have a base while we drove around the Aude and surrounding Départements exploring the local domaines and medieval towns and villages.
The facilities in the house were perfect for us, not least because we could watch the London Olympics on Sky and had fully functioning Wi-fi. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners even when we had to have some additional bedding delivered when our visitors arrived.
The location was ideal also, being situated in the middle of the Cabardes, Corbieres and Minervois wine growing regions, close to Carcassonne, Montpellier, Castres and Albi. We were able to get to our favourite French beach resort of Collioure within 90 minutes.
The village was great, friendly locals and a very good boulangerie and epicerie.
In short, highly recommended.

We are pleased that you had a nice stay at our house and thank you for taking the time to write a review. All the best, Carina

"Wonderful place to chill out."

We had a wonderful stay in a stylish and roomy townhouse. The facilities provided were very good and it was welcome when we arrived to find basic food stuffs and a bottle of wine. The location is excellent for the surrounding area and site seeing.

The guide in the house is very good and it's worth spending time reading it to find out about the local places. The local swimming pool is very good but do check out the dress code for men's swimwear (e.g. swimming shorts are unacceptable) before you go.

The booking organisation and the on-going information from the owners was very helpful and friendly. The whole process was efficient and easy.
