The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This is a region of variety and contrasts .
Within easy reach are mountains and beautiful countryside including farmland, vineyards, and wild 'garrigue'. There is a choice of historic market towns and villages to discover.
Cathar history is interesting to discover and you can visit their spectacular ruined castles set on the tops of hills and mountains.
The famous world heritage site, the Canal du Midi passes nearby.
You can be on a Mediterranean beach at Narbonne Plage in an hour.
The Pyrenean mountains have beautiful scenery and gorges to discover.
Languedoc Roussillon is the largest wine producing area of France and there are some delicious wines to savour!
The beautiful city of Toulouse, a major commercial and shopping centre, is 1 hour to the Northwest. In contrast, Narbonne, 1 hour to the East, is a smaller Mediterannean city with a fascinating Roman history.
Family days out can be enjoyed at places such as the dinosaur museum at Esperaza, the African Safari Park at Sigean, the historic cave painting museum near Foix, or relaxing and swimming in one of our local lakes.
It’s a lovely area with so much to discover.
The Carcassonne / La Force area
The charming cottage, Puilaurens, is in a truly countryside setting, and yet local restaurants and shops can be found only 5 mins drive away in the historic villages of Fanjeaux and Montreal. Two World Heritage sites, the medieval cité of Carcassonne, and the Canal du Midi, are within half an hour. There are several interesting towns with weekly markets, cafés and restaurants within 20 mins drive.
The medieval town of Carcassonne, a world heritage site only 25 minutes drive away, is an interesting, bustling place to visit, with many shops, bars and restaurants.
The local towns all have their festivals providing music and colour.
To give an idea.....each weekend between January and March, Limoux holds its 'Carnaval'....in May Montréal hosts a 'Festival de Bandas'....in August Castelnaudary has its 'Festival de Cassoulet'..... Mirepoix hosts an international puppet Festival in August, and an apple Festival in October......... Carcassonne has a month long Festival in July, and there is so much more.....
Medieval circular villages, built for defence, are a feature of the area.We are 5 minutes walk away from the "circulade" of La Force, with its population of less than 200.
You can take a boat trip on the canal du midi, or even hire a small launch for yourselves.
Some vineyards offer explanatory visits, and all offer wine-tasting - a stimulation for the taste buds!
