The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The Aude region

Puivert is located in the Aude, an area full of authentic beauty and history. Sea, mountain, countyside, hills, plateaux, gorges, lakes and forests - here nature offers gorgeous landscapes and vistas. Drive through the countryside along the 'Route du Payes Cathar' and discover the famous fortresses and Chateaux throughout the region.

The climate in the Aude is temperate with 300 days of sunshine a year. The long summer days can be filled with a multitude of outdoor activities including swmming at 'Le Lac' (only 2 minutes walk from the house), bushwalking, cycling, horseriding, and gliding (from the nearby airfield). The nearby Aude River also offers a range of water sports and activities including white river rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and abseiling. The winter months offer skiable snow on the nearby mountains with the nearest ski resort only 20 minutes away, making Puivert a great choice for a winter holiday.

Within short driving distances, excursions can be made to the mountains of the Pyrenees and Mediterranean beaches and for longer trips, there is Spain and Andorra.

Carcassonne / Puivert area

Puivert and surrounds

Situated in the heart of Cathar country, Puivert has its own XIth century castle, Chateau Puivert. Of all the Cathar castles this is certainly one of the best preserved, dominating the plain of Puivert.

Puivert's Le Lac has swimming, canoeing and fishing, the water is clean and there is a sandy beach, mown grass and the Buvette, which serves great tasty outdoor meals during the hot summer months. Just behind the beach is the tennis court, badminton court and the boule-o-drome. Gliding on the Puivert plain is possible as is horse riding. Puivert is a destination point for hikers drawn to the area by 190 kms of waymarked trails. Cycling, mountain-biking and walking is ideal for naturalists and photographers.

Puivert has an excellent Boulangerie / Patisserie. Just up from the village square there is an excellent mini-supermarket offering everything that you might require. There is also a cafe/bar/tabac, a post office and restaurant. The charcuterie (butcher) and primeur (fruiterer) visit the market square twice weekly and during the summer months, Puivert has a Wednesday evening market.

The larger village of Chalabre is ten minutes away and has markets, restaurants, banks, doctors, dentists, chemists, bars and supermarkets and a petrol station, all to suit your needs.

An hours drive from Puivert is Carcassonne and La Cite, the largest medieval fort in Europe, and cannot be missed as well the famous and nearby Canal du Midi.

Puivert is surrounded by the famous Montsegur, Puylaurens and Queribus castles, all well worth a visit.

Nearby is the medieval town of Mirepoix , another must, especially for its colourful market days as has Couiza, Espereza and Quillan.

The vineyards of Limoux are a short 20 minute drive away and with numerous caves for sampling and buying the renown Cremant and Blanquette, the forerunner to Champagne as we know it today.
