The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The south of France and Languedoc is swamped with beautiful and dramatic landscapes, medieval towns, Cather castles and of course beaches. There are great stretches of spectacular landscapes and river gorges.
The south of France and Languedoc has superb ecclesiastical architecture, great medieval towns like Cordes and Carcassonne, and surprisingly unpopulated beaches away from the major resorts.
The heartland of the region is the Bas Languedoc, the dry, coastal plain, stony, vine growing hills between Nimes and Carcassonne. The area has seen massive tourist development, especially on the coast, and a drastic transformation of the Languedoc’s cheap wine industry.
The Eastern Languedoc is dominated by 2 major cities, Montpellier and Nimes. Nimes is a busy modern town impressive for its denim textile industry and boasts some of the most extensive Roman remains in Europe.
Nimes also has a great tradition of bullfighting. The wildest and best know bullfight is the Feria de Pentecote, which is a 5 day festival over the Whitsun weekend. Millions crowd into Nimes to watch amateur and the worlds best matadors compete. Montpellier too has a fine history.
Thousands of years of intellectual activity and trade have Montpellier a heaving, full of life city. Benjamin of Tudela, the 12th century Jewish traveller, documented that the city’s streets were buzzing with traders from every corner of Greece, Egypt, Spain, Gaul, Pisa and Genoa. Today this University City is vying with Toulouse for the title of the most dynamic city in the south of France and Languedoc. It is worth noting too that the beaches around Montpellier are largely untouched.
The beautiful historic city Toulouse is the cultural capital of the Languedoc. With its charming, historic and cosmopolitan centre Toulouse is one of France’s most vibrant and metropolitan cities. Toulouse is a university city second only to Paris; it is a world renowned aviation centre and has a claim to be the European capital of poetry!
The southern part of Languedoc boasts a stirring and varied landscape. From the coastal flats to the rocky hills the region has a rugged and rich backdrop. The fortress town of Carcassonne is perhaps the most notable, historic and beautiful in the southern Languedoc.
The nearby crumbling Cathar castles of the Aude hark back to the Languedoc’s era of independence, and the wars against the Cathars in the 12th century.
The south of France and Languedoc has such a diverse landscape, you have stylish and chic yacht ports, rolling valleys, rivers, a great and very evident Medieval history, Mediterranean beaches, immense cities and the weather to match. Some of France’s best chateaux are found in the south of France and Languedoc region, and it’s a wonderful place to enjoy a holiday chateau in France.

Where Are We?
The Languedoc-Roussillon Region -- Sea, Wine and Sun
The Languedoc-Roussillon is a triangle which spreads from Nîmes to the north, Perpignan to the south and Toulouse to the west. The Mediterranean landscapes are bathed in sun and freshened by the two dominant winds, the Cers and the Marin. The vineyards, cultivated from the dry stony heath land called Garrigue, can be seen with neat parallel rows of vines throughout the region which continue to the banks of the Midi Canal in the plains. The region’s wines are soft and complex due to the regular ripening of the grapes produced by the hot sun and the cool air from the Montagne Noire.
The Languedoc has always been a region of exchange and creation, occupied successively by Celts, Maurs, Greeks, Romans and Visigoths.
The Aude Department, Cathar Country
The village of Aragon is under the Aude department (similar to a county) within the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Aude represents an extraordinary countryside that includes the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees, and the dry heath land of the garrigues to the rich mountain pastures.
The parallel lines formed by the vines of vineyards compose a visually striking landscape covering the diverse terrain: the plains, the river valleys, the stony chalk hillsides of the Montagne Noire, and the dry red soils of the Corbières. Imposing medieval castles are an important element in the local past and culture. Ten or so ‘Cathar’ castles, also known as the ‘vertiginous citadels’ were built high up on rocky summits to be as inaccessible as possible.
Cabardès, ‘East Wind, West Wind
Two winds blow alternately here, the Cers, a cold dry wind from the north-west and the Marin, warm humid blusters from the Mediterranean sea. The Cabardès was once the land of the Lords of Cabaret, the previous name for the village of Lastours, overlooked by the four medieval fortified towers. The area includes the south facing slopes of the Montagne Noire and the area north of the Cité of Carcassonne.
In the Cabardès, the eye turns naturally towards the north to the Pic de Nord, the summit (1211 metres) of Montagne Noire. The rounded dark curves are a distinctive viewpoint and a dominant landmark.
When the weather is clear in the Cabardès, one can see across the south valley towards the craggy horizon of the Pyrenees mountains. The Pyrenees is a natural grey during the summer and crystal white in the winter, a vista of incomparable beauty.
