Mentioned in Times Online August 12, 2009 as one of 31 most unusual holiday homes in Europe
... 'Sit outside to watch the sunset as your nostrils fill with the aroma of mint and lavender'. ....
Private, full sized grass tennis court, not Wimbledon of course. Charmingly renovated, open-plan, the two levels provide a fabulous holiday home for 4 people. Ideal for families. Set in our 10 acre domain of glorious countryside, on a hill, private, yet at the edge of a small village in Aude with magnificent views in all directions. Beautiful sunsets with our two Camargue horses outlined against the horizon.
Underwater lighting as well as lamps around the pool makes sitting on the pool terrace by the olive trees an experience worth remembering.
Watch the bright stars at night as you are far away from city lights and the air is unpolluted. Perfumes of wild thym and lavender dominate the senses. Fantastic views in all directions. Watch the setting sun as you've never seen it.

Very comfortable accomodation in a unique and novel building. The panoramic view from either of the two gites was jaw-dropping over the vineyards and onto the surrounding hills which envelope the village below. A very child-safe, clean and tidy swimming pool is situated at the far end of the garden; a welcome, cooling rest-bite after the heat of the day. The propiertors are very accomodating and welcoming and as they also live next to the gites, always seem available to help or offer advice. Although I feel the initial briefing could have been a little shorter, as I was quite tired following a long journey. Wished I'd known that bbq's weren't permitted. Brilliant base for cycling with an English cycle hire company (Melo Velos) close by and willing to drop off the bikes. Remote marked-walk outside the gates to the gite, making running a wonderful experience through the wild thyme, lavender, rosemary and holm oaks. The gites' pets are very friendly while the wild fauna are rivetting to watch, especially the eagles and scorpions. Although you feel you are living in a peaceful and remote area, travel to Carcassone and other tourist hot-spots are not too far away. Large supermarkets can be found within a twenty minute drive. Overall a wonderful experience which I wish to repeat. Response: Thank you Gary and Bridie for your detailed and appreciative feedback. We will be happy to welcome you here again. Sorry about the absence of a barbecue. Due to the extreme drought and fire risk here and various near disasters in the past we no longer allow barbecues. Good to know that you found the initial 'tour' of la Couscouillette tiring after your long journey. In future we'll check with guests whether they feel up to it. A bientot! |

Guestbook for Sloping Roof Mill
We arrived tired from work and school! Now we are really relaxed. We enjoyed this small paradise, your kindness and support. Thanks for everything! Let’s see when Lasse will grow up how we will manage it with 5 persons and four beds. There will be a solution. Lou and Mats especially enjoyed your farm and the big playground. Maren and Martin, Switzerland.
Sept 2011 What a unique and hospitable experience! As we trudge to work in the up and coming English winter, we will be cheered by the memories of our week at Sloping Roof Mill. Our morning runs up through the garigue, the smell of the lavender and wild thyme; the views at the top and the eagle. Our cycle rides through the area, with the warm late summer sun on our backs. Your animals; always welcoming us back from a hot day of sight-seeing. But most of all your cheery and heart-felt welcome. Your advice and suggestions. Your tomatoes and fresh eggs. Hopefully an a bientot rather than au revoir. Bridie & Gary.
August'11 Thanks for a beautiful week in the South of France. We enjoyed every day, especially the wonderful terrace with the view over the countryside and our two girls loved to feed the animals with Allan and they liked to assist Allan to feed Temps. Thank you for the fresh vegetables and the eggs. This is a great place to relax and dream. We also liked the pool, especially Katharina and Carlotte. …Many thanks and best wishes from Karl, Elvira, Katharina (9) and Carlotta (4) from Cologne.
August '11 We will all remember our stay here at the Sloping Roof Mill. Freddie (6) for feeding the animals and learning to swim., Sid (8) for meeting Nathan from France in the mill next door and watching the stars. John for enjoying the heat and peace of the site and me for a very memorable ‘tennis’ match that was won through volleys……..
Thanks to Allan and Margaret for being attentive and providing the lovely eggs, tomatoes and courgettes Regards Andrea, John, Sid + Fred. Bristol UK
August '11 We enjoyed our stay here very much –mainly nature, the villages, the two always hungry dogs William and Fifi and of course Temps, (horse), who likes carrots a lot…
Here’s a tip for the guests to come: In Lagrasse there’s a salon du thé with amazing lunch (11.30 – 14.30) and the best chocolate cake we’ve ever eaten! ‘La Petite Mison’ 12 Boulevard de la Promenade Lagrasse. Open 8 – 18h.
Thanks for the nice holiday!
Sabine and Holger

Sept '10 This is our second holiday in the Sloping Roof Mill (and I hope won’t be our last)
The perfect place to relax and unwind with a good book or two, a glass of wine or a coffee and little else.
Slow down, breathe deeply and let the magic of La Couscouillette take over. Nature surrounds you from the crickets & the butterflies to ‘toad in the hole’ & dragonflies. We even saw a wild boar out of the villag3e when returning froma meanl!
The new pool is a great joy and Tracy made ample use of it. Thanks for a great holiday, Robin & Tracy, Holmforth, West Yorkshire

Learned to snorkel in the beautiful pool and having the freedom to roam in such a safe environment. The mill has everything a family could need and is superbly equipped. Recommendation.. chill out, you don't need to go anywhere! However, Carcassonne, restaurants, Perpignan and Narbonne and beach at St Pierre.. The Allens.

2008 August...but this place, the Sloping Roof Mill, is quite unique. Apart from the fact that it is actually a 'Tardis', and a very comfortable one too, it has spirited us away from the rest of the world in a very special way. ... temperatures in the 30's we've loved the pool and sitting out on the terrace at night listening to the owls and watching for shooting stars...Thank you both for such a great experience.
