Holidaying in Peyriac you are only 20 minutes from the spectacular walled 'cite' at Carcassonne, you are surounded by the vineyards of the Minervois, with literally dozens of fascinating historic villages, with their stone houses and winding cobbled streets waiting for you to explore.
Spain is 110 minutes away on the autoroute.
The Carcassonne area
The village of Peyriac is located on the river Double Argent in that part of the Languedoc known as the Minervois. The Languedoc is one of the largest wine-growing regions of France and the village of Peyriac is nestled in the vineyards that stretch out to the nearby mountains.
You will also see the area around Peyriac referred to as “Cathar Country”, a reference to the Cathars who once built many castles in the area. It is also possible to visit some of the remaining castles and the nearby town of Minerve to get to know more about the Cathars.
Peyriac has a population of about 1000. Most of the houses in Peyriac are locally owned so that there is not a large “expat” community – you will experience true French village life. Rue de la Ville is the old main commercial street of Peyriac and you will see numerous old shop and business signs dotted along the rue. Fortunately, traffic now runs along the main road and the rue has become a quiet residential street.
You will see that many of the village houses have an attic floor known as a “grenier” used originally for storage of grain etc. Some are still used for storage purposes but, as at Number 11, many greniers have been converted into living space – that explains the low ceilings in these rooms!
Surrounding part of the village is the remains of the original walls. Near to Number 11 you will discover the chateau, privately owned and under restoration. Down each small street you will find charming and interesting parts of the village.
