The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc Roussillon is an incredible region. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the east, the Pyrenees and Spain to the south, the Région of Midi-Pyrénées to the west, and the Massif Central (and Auvergne Région) to the North.
January and February are the winter months. Lots of rain, occasional frosts and snowfalls on the plains. Consistent snow in the mountains. March and April can be unpredictable, with glorious sunshine interspersed with cloudy, rainy cool days. May and June are usually pleasant, with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures.
July and August are hot and dry, with temperatures around 30° C. September is usually very sunny. October is often a beautiful month. Days are warm and sunny. November and December are cooler but still very pleasant, with lots of sunshine.
Things to see in the region include:
Settlements of historical and architectural interest, specifically: cities, market towns, villages and bastides, including circulades.
Religious buildings of historical and architectural interest, specifically: cathedrals, churches and abbeys. Fortified and grand buildings of historical and architectural interest, specifically: the "Cathar Castles".
World Heritage sites in the Languedoc include:.
The Mediterranean Coast and the Canal du Midi. Aspects of nature including: countryside, wildlife, springs, spas and caves.
Another thing to see is the night sky. Light pollution is low in the Languedoc, so you will ten times as many stars as you would in many parts of Europe.
"La Cité" and "La Bastide" are the 2 different parts of Carcassonne, united by the beautiful old bridge "Le Pont Vieux".
In the "Bastide Saint Louis", dating back to the 13th century and located between the Canal du Midi and the Medieval City, the walker can discover its churches, cathedral, museums, shaded square and open air markets including the market place in La Place Carnot in the centre of the Bastide.
The town is served by a free of charge Aglo Bus service. Wave a hand at the driver and he will stop and take you to where you want to go in the town.
La Cité de Carcassonne is principally known for it's medieval fortification but this rocky spur has been occupied by man since the 6th century BC. In 1209, Carcassonne was taken by Simon de Montfort during the Albigeoise crusade. Now, with its 3 km of ramparts and 52 towers, the Medieval city is one of the biggest middle age castles in Europe.
Transport: Boat and bike hire are available or for those who want to explore further car hire is available locally through numerous agencies such as Ucar or Ada etc. The railway station is also at only 5 minutes on foot from the apartment for trips further afield to Toulouse or Montpellier etc.
Carcassonne also offers numerous Festivals, shows and concerts, with headline bands (www.carcassonne.org) and the incredible fireworks display on Bastille day (14th July). Bastille day is celebrated like no other in France. La Cité comes alight with over 1200 charges detonated over the Cité's facade, making it one of the biggest displays in Europe. Why not watch from the banks of the river Aude while picnicking.
At Christmas, Carcassonne is transformed into a ' Magical Winter Wonderland ', with displays lighting up the Cité and the Bastide. Enjoy a glass of hot mulled wine in the Place Carnot, whilst watching the skaters on the ice-rink, or stroll around one of the log cabins selling locally hand-made gifts.
