Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
One of the main attractions in this area is the medieval citadel of Carcassonne (Cite) which looks like (and was) the backdrop to a film (Robin Hood Prince of Thieves). The spectacular walled town is one of France's most famous national monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally a Roman settlement, then a medieval walled town, it was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and has an inner keep with shops, restaurants and bars that line the streets and courtyards within. Take a look at the Carcassonne website for details on events throughout the year (on www.carcassonne.org) especially the fabulous Festival de La Cite.
Not to be outdone, across the river Aude, the other side of Carcassonne, the equally impressive Bastide St Louis, provides more modern shopping in a labyrinth of semi-pedestrianised streets radiating out from the Place Carnot - an ideal stopping place for a mid morning cafe creme, lazy luncheon or outdoor market shopping on Saturday mornings. Other great markets are held nearby, especially those in Limoux and Mirepoix - both worth a visit and not just for the markets! Not forgetting Castlenaudry which also has a market but is perhaps more famous for its Cassoulet - a staple on most menus whilst some restaurants specialise in this traditional dish. Overall the cuisine is to the usual high standards you would expect, although some personal favourite restaurants are included in the villa information pack.
The Canal du Midi marina in front of the Gare SNCF offers a range of canal side walks or boat trips which glide through the quiet waters up to one of the huge locks which is well worth experiencing.
Slightly further afield are the Cathar Castles to be explored and the Cathar Daisy routes invite you to follow several sightseeing itineraries (between 50km and 200km in length) to and from Carcassonne. Each route is shaped like a petal in the Cathar Daisy. See all the names within Kate Mosse's book, Labyrinth or try Terry Darlington's Narrow Dog to Carcassonne to get a medieval and modern take on the area.
Set in the major wine growing region of Malepere and Minevois as well as the Corbieres and Fitou brands en route this is a wine buffs paradise with so many varieties to taste (and buy) new favourites are added to the list on each visit! A must is the locally produced Blanquette de Limoux which is the original forerunner of what is known as Champagne.
For a more traditional feel or beach type holiday the Mediterranean beach at Narbonne Plage is about an hour away and easily accessed along the motorway or the more leisurely N routes which pass through quaint villages.
If France does not hit all the buttons, then Andorra and Spain are both accessible for a flavour of slightly different cultures whilst in a reasonable driving distance of 1.5-2 hours.
The Carcassonne / Lavalette area
The village of Lavalette has all key amenities with a butchers, newsagents, post office, general store / greengrocers and hairdresser / beautician. Several outlets sell freshbread and croissants etc. An excellent pizzeria is now open in the village centre and is well worth a visit. Major supermarkets of Geant and L'Eclerc are within 10 minutes and close by the airport for stocking up en route.
Whilst the website is a little dated it is worth a look on http://commune.lavalette.free.fr/principal.htm. During the summer months there are a number of festivals in and around the surrounding villages which provide a pleasant day / evening of traditional village festivities. These complement well the internationally renowned festivals held in Carcassone just 15 minutes away.

The property has everything your heart desires, from pots and pans to sun loungers by the pool. Is very near to the airport which is a big plus as you do not want to drive forever after your flight but far enough not to be disturbed by the noise. Quite location, my husband and I loved the serine of the village. Loved the sky satellite, it went well in the evening over a bottle of wine! Very clean property and comfy bed.The owners, Carrie and Tony were very friendly and helpful, they even mailed me an area map, I mean who does that? Close to Carcassonne ancient city which is a must if you visit as it will take you back in time, just make sure you have a fully charged camera! Highly recommended. |
