Apartment | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Les Platanes has two en suite double bedrooms, one with a bath and the other with a shower. There are two reception rooms, a sitting room with 2 sofa-beds and a spacious kitchen-diner. It is ideal for 2 couples and is also a wonderful base for a family holiday.
There are a dozen or so brasseries, restaurants and cafes around the square and many of the town's festivities take place there. These range from exhibitions of Spanish dancing during the summer to a skating rink in December. The apartment is the perfect place for people-watching!
The fabulous Cite is a 15 minute walk across the River Aude and the Pont Vieux, with stunning views of the walls and turrets. In the summer you can watch jousting in the lists, exactly where it took place in the age of the medieval Troubadours.
It is a short walk to the railway station, with trains to Toulouse, Narbonne, Beziers, Perpignan, Agde, Sete, Monpellier and further afield, and there are coaches in the summer to the Cathare castles.
The Canal du Midi is directly in front of the railway station and in the warmer weather you can take a two hour trip along the canal. You can also walk along the tow path with views across to the Cite, or along the banks of the River Aude.
For swimming and sunbathing there is a bus service to a beautiful local recreational lake, and a big plus - no motor boats are allowed!

The apartment is beautifully equipped, with many things you would not expect to find in a rental apartment. We have furnished and equipped it as we would a second home, rather than a rental property and several guests have remarked that it feels as though they have been invited to borrow a friend's flat. We have furnished it in a French style and absolutely nothing came from Ikea!
|Further details outdoors|
There is no parking immediately outside the apartment as the road is pedestrianised. There are parking spaces in the surrounding streets and two free car parks. However we always use one of the three secure underground car parks (5 minutes walk away) - you buy a swipe card that costs 20 euros for the week - even if we are only there for less time - which allows you to enter and exit 24/7.
There are public swimming pools in Carcassonne and a beautiful recreational lake half an hour away by bus.
Flowers and a bottle of wine are provided on arrival, and there is milk in the fridge.
The apartment is managed locally by an English couple.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Carcassonne was one of the centres of the Albigensian heresy of the Middle Ages. When the heretics were finally beaten the Cite was destroyed and the inhabitants driven down to live in the ville basse,or Lower Town, where the apartment is situated. If you haven't read the novel 'Labyrinth' by Kate Mosse, before you stay, there is a copy in the apartment. It is a novel set in this era and is a wonderful introduction for visitors to the area.
The Cite fell into an increasing state of disrepair until it was restored in the nineteenth century by Viollet-le-Duc., and it is now one of the most visited places in France.
Carcassonne is a wonderful place from which to explore the Languedoc and the Cathare country. There are many abbeys, museums and castles to visit dating from the era of the Cathars, and many of the castles such as Peyrepetuse, Queribus, Lastours, Montsegur and others are an amazing sight, perched precariously and dramatically on the summits of rocky peaks.
The 14th July fireworks are truly magnificent. When they are viewed from across the River Aude the fireworks explode in rapid succession along the entire line of the walls of the Cite.
You can also visit the gorges and mountains of the Pyrenees, and don't miss the PETIT TRAIN JAUNE, which links the mountain villages on the French side of the Pyrenees and runs throughout the year.
Historic cities, towns and villages to visit include Toulouse, Albi, Perpignan, Montpellier, Beziers, Narbonne, Mirepoix and Limoux - and many more. Guide books are supplied in the apartments.
Seaside towns and villages to visit include Sete and Agde to the south east, and Collioure and Port Vendres towards the Spanish border.
The Canal du Midi is a must, and there are short trips available from Carcassonne during the holiday season that will give you a taste of canal life. Several clients have combined a stay in the apartment with a week on the canal. It is also very pleasant to walk or cycle along the canal.
There are numerous excellent restaurants in the area, both in the Cite and in the lower town, including a couple of 2 Star Michelin restaurants.
There is also a Salon de The immediately below the apartment with ice-creams and smoothies to die for!
There are a couple of supermarkets a minute's walk away that are open from 7.00 in the morning until 9.00 at night most days except public holidays, and in the streets of the Bastide there are lots of wonderful little shops to explore.
There are a couple of swimming pools in the town as well as the lake mentioned earlier; there is a golf course, there is is riding available, and it is an excellent area for walking and cycling.
??There are annual summer festivals in Carcassonne, both in the lower town and in the Cite, featuring both national and international stars. They feature pop concerts, jazz concerts, plays, opera, exhibitions and all sorts of other activities. Look out of the window of the apartment in July and August and you may see strolling minstrels, a brass band, acrobats, dancers, and other entertainers.
There are many other festivals throughout the year, such as the wine festival, the Spanish Week, the jazz festival and others.
And of course the magnificent firework display on July 14th is the most spectacular in France (although I dare say Parisians would dispute this!).
At Christmas there is the ice rink in the square, which has at least a couple of displays by professional skaters, including a display on Christmas Eve that ends with Santa abseiling down into the Square. There are many other activities, such as the Foie Gras fair, a ferris wheel, sleigh rides and much more.
Throughout the year there are other festivals, such as the Wine Festival, a jazz festival, a Spanish week and many more.

"A touch of class."
Les Plantanes in Carcassonne is the perfect apartment. My wife and I have stayed in a variety of holiday accommodation over the years, but we have never stayed in anything like this, I will be very surprised if we ever stay in one like it again. It is bright, very comfortable and spacious, large enough for a family to live in. The owner has gone to lengths above and beyond to ensure that it is furnished and equipped to an exceptional standard. Everything a guest requires, and more, is there.
If you are going to Carcassonne and want to pamper yourself, stay at Les Platanes. A touch of class.
What a great review. Thank you very much.

We had a wonderful stay at Les Platanes. The weather was atrocious but the apartment was a great bolt hole to escape the rain. It is well located looking out onto the square where the market is buzzing on saturdays. There is everything you need in the apartment and the instructions sent out before the holiday were very helpful so that we arrived and knew exactly what to do. I would definitely return and stay here again and would recommend anyone else that wants a comfortable stay in a apartment that gave us a piece of France for a long weekend.
Sorry about the weather but delighted to hear the apartment was so appreciated.

"Beautiful apartment in beautiful Carcasonne!"
Les Plantanes is a home from home, filled with all you would need for a very comfortable long or short stay in Carcasonne. The welcome flowers and wine are a lovely touch, the information prior to arriving first class and made door to door one of the smoothest stress free transitions ever, we always self cater and Carolines attention to detail was the best ever received. Airport bus is very convenient and although takes about 20minutes, is sitting waiting for you upon arrival.
The apartment is very well placed for eating out and all the attractions of the city and waking up on a Saturday morning to the market and watching from the kitchen windows was fabulous.
We were so pleased to hear how much this reviewer so enjoyed her stay. We always hope our apartments make our clients feel they are as comfortable and relaxed as they would be in their own home, and we were also very pleased to hear how easy the client found her arrival.

"Will recommend to all my friends"
Four of us (2 couples) stayed for 4 nights. The instructions provided were spot on and we had no difficulty getting into the apartment. We were all wowed by the apartment and its location, overlooking the main square in Carcassonne which has a wonderful market on a Saturday morning. Everything you need is in the apartment with a really comfortable separate lounge which is always an added bonus. There was lots of additional information on Carcassonne and the region in the apartment too, which we used.

"Beautiful authentic apartment"
Four of us stayed at Les Platanes at the end of April. The weather in Carcassonne was unusually poor for this time of year, but the apartment and the beautiful city made up for the weather. It was a … More
