About the home

Le Moulin is a recently renovated gite built into the heart of an 18th century watermill and set amid two acres of gardens.

It is located in the historic quarter of Villegailhenc, a small village in Cabardes wine country, between medieval Carcassonne and the beautiful Black Mountains.

Yet despite being surrounded by so much green space, Le Moulin is just five minutes walk from the village centre and all local amenities.

The shaded and secluded pool area receives sun from dawn to dusk and includes a paddling pool area for the very young.

Older children might like to explore the trampoline, football, cricket and badminton facilities.

So whether it is wine tasting in the local domaines, hiking in the Black mountains or a trip to the seaside, you can do it all from Le Moulin.

The property has two bedrooms. The first is a double room with a beautiful stone floor and views over the extensive gardens.The second has flexible arrangement which can be a twin, a single or a double as required. Several of our younger (and some not-so-young) guests have made the most of our extensive grounds and the warm nights by camping out. There are some great camping spots in the back garden, secure and secluded and perfect for spotting shooting stars. We are big fans of camping ourselves and have all the gear, so feel free to borrow!

We have three cats and one friendly dog - let us know if you don't like animals!

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

The Carcassonne area

From white-water rafting on the river Aude to horse-riding, mountain-biking and wine-tasting tours virtually from the doorstep, there is always plenty to do in the local area.

Every August our village - Villegailhenc - hosts a weekend-long party which includes a fair, music, dancing eating and drinking. And September brings the local flea market, perfect for bargain hunters.

Also, no visit to Le Moulin would be complete without an excursion to the historic city of Carcassonne, five miles to the south.

In addition to its summer-long music and arts festival and spectacular Bastille Day firework display, Carcasonne features two UNESCO world heritage sites - the historic medieval Cite and the beautiful tree-lined Canal du Midi.

Plus you will find all the shops restaurants and bars you would expect from a bustling regional town.

“Good location but not luxury - more suited to a couple than a family” This gite is in a convenient location for exploring Carcassonne and access to the coast. It has a good pool and spacious grounds. The hosts are very friendly. However, I would describe the accomodation as 'basic' rather than 'luxury'. It is housed in a block beneath the owner's part of the house, located in between the owners' garage and utility space. Hence, it has limited natural light and ventilation. The space, the amount of storage and the lounge seating/dining is better suited to a couple than to a family of four or more. One practical suggestion: It would make a difference if the old piano which is housed in this small space (and which was unplayable at the time we were staying) could be replaced with either a chest of drawers, armchair or a larger fridge. Response: We have been thinking about how best to accommodate families and as a result are undertaking a major revamp of our gite during the winter 2012/13. Firstly we are adding a second bedroom, which will increase floorspace, storage space and double the number of bedspaces. Also, an extra French window will give additional natural light and ventilation. We are also redesigning the living area, installing new furniture, UK satellite TV and undertaking a complete redecoration. We think these changes, together with our much-praised pool area and two acres of grounds, will provide an ideal combination for families, and indeed, all our guests.
