About the home

The Domaine is in the Languedoc Roussillon, amongst stunning flower meadows in the foothills of the Pyrenees. On 14 acres of private property encircling the Domaine you will find: clouds of butterflies, a huge variety of birds (lovely springtime morning birdsong) and flowers (including 15 wild orchid species). At an altitude of 1300 feet with no near neighbours surrounded by hills, you can expect to enjoy total tranquillity at the Domaine. Due to the unique topography surrounding the Domaine, there is no light pollution when viewing the night sky - perfect for astronomy whether simply enjoying the amazing romantic view the sky or serious astronomers anticipating cosmic events.

There is easy access to the nearby charming and popular towns of Limoux and medieval Mirepoix. We are enviably located for trips to the ever popular fortified City of Carcassonne (30 mins) along with a wealth of well known attractions such as the Cathar Castles, prehistoric sites and caves and of course the Mediterranean coast. Three local airports offer easy access - Carcassonne, Toulouse and Perpignan (35 to 90 minutes)

The stylish and elegant bedrooms are individually designed and named after local Cathar Castles. Each room features high quality facilities with private and immaculate bath or shower rooms, large beds (160x200) and fine linens. The main rooms enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. There is a new fully equipped good sized kitchen next to the enormous dining room (7m x 5m). The two lounges, library and dining room (seats 10) enjoy subtle French influences. Ample and safe parking is available on site.

The householders, Justine and Randall, are on site in separate accommodation and are available to advise you and help plan your excursions and maintain the pool and grounds. Tourist information is available in the large well stocked library. For the more energetic, we can provide good local walk details along with tennis, fishing, horse riding, sailing, canoing, rafting, golf and skiing nearby. There is a huge selection of over twenty restaurants nearby offering a range of dining opportunities should you decide to not cook. We can also arrange for catering should you want a special treat.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This region is an extremely popular area to stay in France. Enjoying lovely long warm Summers and pleasant temperatures in Spring and Autumn. Lots of local history in and stunning scenery. Cathars castles dot the region and the rural French countryside provides many "WOW" moments (don't go anywhere without your camera!) on any drive in the area. Mirepoix, Limoux, and Carcassonne are minutes away and have events year-round.

Mediterranean beaches, lakes, rivers, mountains, vineyards, wineries. Landscapes are nevertheless very diverse, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pyrenees mountains. Amongst a rich heritage, discover the medieval castles, the « Citadelles du vertige » (literally, head spin citadels), evidence of the Cathar epic ; romanesque abbeys and cloisters; the Medieval city of Carcassonne; the Roman city of Narbonne; prehistoric caves; and many other unique locations. There are a wide range of outdoor activities in spectacular landscapes : walks under the centenarian trees bordering the famous Canal du Midi, hiking, water sports, cycle touring, mountain bike tours, speleology, and many more. Above all, Aude hosts the biggest and oldest vineyard of France. Gastronomy is an art in this region, where you'll be delighted by local recipes and grand wines.

The Carcassonne / Peyrefitte-du-Razes area

Limoux is perhaps best known for its Winter festival, Carnival or fête. It is generally referred to as Carnaval de Limoux in the French language. This takes place between January and Easter. As of 2011 the wine Festival "Toques et Clochers" will be held in Limoux every spring.The cafe scene is dominant in Limoux where food and drink represent the dominant cultural pastime.
The heart of the town is the place de la République, a wide square with some fine stone arcading and a number of timber framed houses. Limoux straddles the River Aude and the banks are lined with grand houses, especially on the eastern side, the so-called Petite Ville (lit. "Small City").
Limoux is an attractive place with a wonderful sense of fun. The town likes to party in a most unself-conscious way and for its own pleasure rather than for the sake of tourists. While worth visiting in itself, it is also an excellent base for discovering the history of the region and is ideally placed for exploring the coast, the mountains and some of the finest walking country in France.

Mirepoix: On the large central square you can still admire the half-timbered houses supported on wood pillars, creating a magnificent covered arcade. The ends of the joists of the richest houses are sculpted, and the most beautiful sculptures are on the house of the Justice du Seigneur, which became in 1500 the Maison des Consuls, showing women's faces, bearded heads, a tortoise and other fantastical images.

The little church of St Maurice built in 1298 by Jean de Lévis and his wife Constance de Foix was transformed over time into a cathedral. Today the cathedral of St Maurice has a single nave 48 m long, 24 m high, 22 m wide, a gothic gate and an elegant 60 m high pointed belltower. Of the cathedrals of Europe only that of Gerona in Spain has a wider nave. You can still admire a tabernacle, a Christ on the cross from the 14th century and seven paintings by Larivière-Vesontius.

Peyrefitte-du-Razès is a small village on the road midway between Limoux and Mirepoix with signage directing you to Domaine de Couchet.

“Beautiful setting, relaxing amidst history” As an American who doesn't speak French, I was a little nervous when I brought my family to stay at Domaine du Couchet. My fears were quickly allayed when we met our charming hostess Justine Wallington. Not only was she welcoming and gracious, she was quite knowlegeable about the history and features of the area. This enabled us to expose our children to history and culture of France that they would never have gotten from a textbook. How often do your children get to walk in an old castle and imagine the life there? In addition, she pointed us to wonderful places both to eat and buy food. The market of Mirapoix was out of a fairy tale. The dinners at Les Remparts and Hotel Commerce in Mirepoix were better than 5 star restaurants back home. Even the supermarket fare beat our fine gourmet shops here in the states at 1/10th the price. It was so relaxing at the Domaine, surrounded only by nature, yet having the amenities such as the gorgeous pool all to ourselves. I never dreamed we were going to such a retreat. We cannot wait until we have a chance to visit again--in some ways I don't even wish to write this review as I would like to keep the place all to myself. Seriously though, this is a spot not to be missed.
