Carcassonne area

The Market town of Quillan throws open the door wide to heartfelt experiences. Quillian gateway to the Cathar Pyrennes. Located just 9km from Nebias, Quillan is in the Languedoc-Roussilon region. It lies just a few miles south of the regions capital Carcassonne. A small and charming town that serves as a base for people exploring the deep and enchanting forests of the Pyrenees along with the captivating castles of the Cathars. The largest industry in the town concerns the manufacture of shoes and hats. The town has its own rather unusual castle. The perfectly square fortifications were built in the 1280’s and are now largely ruins. There’s plenty of scope for sports and recreation, although rugby is certainly the most popular with the locals. What makes Quillan such an alluring destination is it’s absorbing surroundings. Just about every adventurous activity you can think of such as horse riding, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, hiking, climbing and cycling, are catered for among the rocky mountains, deep gorges and dark caves of the Upper Aude Valley. If you’d prefer something a bit more relaxing then you’ll be pleased to know that you can also give bowls or fishing a go. Quillan has a number of great shops, restaurants and bars. The best place to search for traditional goods and sample local produce is at the town market on a Wednesday or Saturday. May and October are the town’s busiest months as a number of carnivals and festivals take place.
