BookThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
This area averages about 300 days of sunshine a year and summer can last from May to November. This is Cathare Country so we have many splendid chateaux to visit, Montsegur and Queribus to name a few. Visit Rennes-le-Chateau, the mysterious and infamous village featured in The Da Vinci code only about 15 minutes away but can be seen from the house. Rennes-les-Baines is a thermal spa town as mentioned in The Sepulchre by Kate Moss. This is also wine country, you can visit many of the local "caves" and sample the red, white and rose produced in this area or even try the famous Blanquette, the first sparkling wine produced in France, even older than champagne! The foothills of the Pyrenees are nearby with their many walking trails graded into various levels, to suite all standards of fitness. The beaches of Narbonne and Perpignan are only about an hour and a half away enabling you to swim in the mediteranean or simply sample the numerous sea food dishes offered as "plat de jour" In the winter months skiing is nearby, the pistes at Camurac (38km), Mizanes-Donezan (38km), Ax-Les-Thermes (49km), offer varying degrees of difficulty from novice to expert.
The Carcassonne / Esperaza area
Esperaza is a quiet village with the river Aude running through it. You can easily walk into the village with its 2 mini markets, bakers ,butchers, post office and chemists. There are also bars, restaurants and a train station. On Sundays the village comes alive with it's Sunday market, well known in the area. Here you can get all your local produce and try the local cheeses, honey and wine. In Esperaza we have a dinosaur museum, and a hat museum. There are several Pyreneean walks in this area. 20 minutes away are the thermal spas of Alet-les-Baines and Rennes-les-Baines. The spas date back to Roman times. We are also centrally located to visit the Cathar castles such as Montsegur and Queribus. We are 40 minutes from Carcassonne where you can visit the medieval city, take a boat on the Canal du Midi or have a round of golf. Through July to September all the local villages have their fetes, with music & dancing. There are many evening markets. In July there is a folklore festival, this has groups from all over the world showing their traditional dance and music. It culminates with a grand firework display. The Tour De France often comes past or close to this area and in Quillan they have an annual cycle race in August round the village attended by some of the top riders. Esperaza is an ideal base to discover all there is to see in the Aude region.

We stayed at this lovely accomodation in September and were fortunate to have great weather, therefore the pool was especially welcome after our busy days out, the garden is immaculate and has decked sunbathing area, barbeques both in the garden and also on the terrace, we mainly used the one on the terrace as it was straight out from the kitchen. The house is very spacious and beautifully kept. What really appealed to us that after siteseeing all day we did not have to get into the car and drive to a restaurant in the evenings as there were three restaurants all within a couple of minutes walk. We visited many places during our 2 week stay including Andorra, Spain and the French coast. Minerva is a must, its a lovely village on the edge of a Gorge.A must see is the mysterious Renne Le Chateau (which you can see high on a hill from the top terrace) and of course Carcassosne Medieval Cite. Will be back Response: Thankyou for your kind comments. My wife and I are delighted that you enjoyed both your holiday in this wonderful area and your time spent in our accommodation. |
