The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Once the heart of Cathar country, this region is full of history and interest. The Cité of Carcassonne (featured in Kate Mosse's book of Labyrinth) is a 10 minute drive and one of the most visited sites of France . There are numerous Cathar castles within an easy drive. There is also the famous village of Rennes de Chateau which inspired tales such as The Di Vinci Code. There are several Meditteranean beaches within 40 minutes drive and the mountains of the Pyrenees can be reached in a little over an hour for walking, climbing, mountain biking and winter skiing. The area is known for being the sunniest in France.

Carcassonne

Trebes is a small town which has both the River Aude and the Canal du Midi flowing through it and a canal port at the centre of the town. You will also find:

13th century church, boat & bicycle hire, several supermarkets and a choice of bars & restaurants.

The nearest large city is Carcassonne, where you will find:

The fortified "La Cité" of Carcassonne- a world heritage site

Charming French city centre (full of restaurants, shops, theatre, cinema etc.)

Lovely markets

Le Cassoulet - typical French dish of the region

"Great location but try another apt"

I had been really looking forward to my stay on the Canal. The pictures were beautiful. But... No screens and next to the barn meant way too many flies. While we don't need luxury, the furnishing… More

"A true insight to the real France"

Perfect for a quick getaway in the French countryside, I had a very nice holiday at Millepetit . I was looking for somewhere to relax and go for walks and, being only a few metres from the canal du midi, this place was ideal . The gite is also situated on a farm which made it more interesting to me but expect to see tractors and working farmers! The gite is comfortable with basic necessities but no garden. There is however plenty of outdoor space right on the doorstep and also near sites like La Cite, but a car is needed,!

"Recommend staying in one of the other options offered at this location"

I really hesitated about writing this review, but felt some balance was needed for the only other review, which we think is misleading. We sought self-contained accommodation because we do not like to… More

"Only the cool weather was a disappointment"

My type of holiday accommodation

We had the single bedroom/kitchen/living room letting; basic and clean. Very helpful and friendly owners-their 12 year old son was a breath of fresh air.

The surroundings are both tranquil and hectic. Twenty five meters, unlimited access, to the Canal du Midi and in the yard of a busy farm. (Asparagus, picked that morning at 5 euros a kilo) Also, twenty five meters from a wine producer! In my eighty years I have sampled reds of all manner of prices and qualities and at three euros a bottle this must be one of the best.

Very close to Trebes where the supermarket stocks all that we required and Carcassonne has all that we needed from a holiday destination. La Cite, the ancient Carcassonne was well worth the three visits we made in our seven night stay.

Luxury? No. Good value for a comfortable and interesting holiday? Without a doubt, yes.
