The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Villa Marina is in the Razes area , one of the most beautiful in France and home of Malpere wine.Summers are warm with clear blue sky's and light breeze's due to its proximity to the rolling foothills of the Pyrenee's and so it is rarely too hot .Autumns and Springs are temperate . Winter is sharp and clear as befits it's proximity to the skiing areas.
Steeped in the history of the Cathars the immediate area is one of the most historic in France and includes the world heritage site of Carcassonne, the medieval town of Mirepoix , the marvellous Castelnaudary built on the famous Canal du Midi .the spa's at Alet les Bains , kayaking, canoeing and rafting at Couiza and the
mysterious Rennes les Chateau so inextricably part of the Da Vinci Code. The novels of Kate Mosse ( Labyrinth etc) are all based on this magnificent and varied region.
Lightly populated outside historic circular villages and towns, crossed by the Canal du Midi , ringed by the Pyrenee's and the Black Mountains and with it's gentle hills covered in a constant tapestry of sunflowers , vineyards and tree's this is an ideal place to relax , tour around when you feel up to it , golf , boat on the Canal du Midi , visit Andorra and the picturesque villages of the Pyrenee's or nip down to the Mediterranian coast at Narbonne , Agde, Collioure or cross into northern Spain and still be home for tea !
In winter , the glorious colours and proximity of top class family friendly ski resorts attract many who wish to ski but also to enjoy the countryside , cities, shopping and cuisine.
For the wine lover this area is ideal . It's plentiful Chateaux and Domains , each with their own history and individual wines, are always open to visitors where you can taste their famous wines and purchase cheaply.Famous for it's markets , all of the surrounding towns have superbly organised markets on different days and you can buy meat , preserves and cheese from the mountains, wine's and blanquette ( local champagne and very good value) from the area and delicacies from the Basque country as well as pottery , clothes, art and anitiques.Visits to Carcassonne's ancient "Le Cite "are a liftetime experience for young and old as you enter across the drawbridge, walk the battlements and lunch royally in the central square protected by the towers and walls of your very own Camelot.
Mirepoix and its Monday morning market is not to be missed as you look aroung the surrounding buildings and realise that you are in a genuine medieval market place which has not changed for hundereds of years. These plus the bustling Limoux , Castelnaudary and Bram on the Canal du Midi are all within 30 mins of Villa Marina or if you feel more energetic and wish to follow the trail of the historic Cathars then an hour brings you to their most famous castles or up the mountains to Couiza , Rennes les Chateau etc. or you can take a boat along the canal, meander through the vineyards from village to village, walk in the Pyrenee's mountain trails ,go horse riding , kayaking or rafting within 40 mins , or just travel the 5 mins to play tennis in nearby Montreal. Festivals abound all through the year with peak activity in May to October with the famous Festival of Carcassonne in July ,one of the many highpoints.
For many , this is a wonderful area to rest , relax , get away from it all and to experience the true France and the wonderful and hospitable local people. The village of Cailhavel is typical of small working villages in the Razes which are surrounded by vineyards and linked directly by road and walking routes to larger towns such as Montreal ( 5 mins) and Limoux ( 20 mins).Sitting by the pool of Villa Marina or having a glass of local wine beside the vineyard while looking at the Pyrenee's will chill out the most pressurised visitor and be an enduring haven in your heart long after you go home.

"Perfect place for a relaxing holiday."
Villa Marina is a lovely property, very private with great outdoor eating and a very good size pool. Cailhavel is very small with few facilities but the villa is close to many lovely towns, 20 minutes drive from Carcassone and just over an hour to some great beaches. I could have happily sat by the pool for a week but we managed to do a lot and still feel very relaxed. The kitchen was fabulously stocked, better than any rental property we've stayed in and we really felt as if we were in a home rather than a holiday property. If you go, do use Dotty Kitchen for catering, great food and good value.

"Absolutely Lovely - Wish we could stay forever"
We were looking so forward to this holiday as the pictures were amazing - and when we arrived our expectations were surpassed. This is a truly wonderful property - the villa is beautiful and the furnishings are really high class. No rickety beds here - all the beds are wonderfully comfortable with good mattresses and the lounge is truly comfortable. The TV has a DVD player, and English satellite channels. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped with everything you could ever need. The welcome packs was most welcome as well as it was great not to have to rush out and buy things straight away. The location is wonderful - it is just outside of a small village, rural - but still close to lots of amenities and wonderful towns - I particularly recommend Carcassonne and Mirapoix - the market on Monday mornings is wonderful. And finally to the grounds - they were just amazing - the pool is in a natural sun trap and is spotlessly clean. The woods, small vineyard, and grounds are a pleasure - something for everyone! - And the Views, well they are just stunning - on a clear day you can see the snow covered Pyrenees. - It is just breathtaking. We are a family with an 8 year old, a 16 year old and a couple in our 40s - and we found this villa just wonderful - we will definitely be coming back next year!

"Tranquil setting, yet close to local services"
The house was just as described, and everything was good. We were especially grateful for things like pool towels and bin bags! Trivial I know, but it's so annoying to arrive on Saturday evening with on 1 bag available to have to try and find the right size the next day – and of course it is never the same size as the one you have at home .....
The area around has lots of interesting small towns to visit for lunch, and of course the view of the Pyrenees from the garden with snow on the caps was breathtaking.
Anyway, everything was great, our grown up children enjoyed their week with us, though the weather could have been better (but to be expected in early May).

"A little bit of French paradise"
Everything from the first contact with the owner to the day we left was absolutely perfect.
The owner was really helpful from the start, telling us about good things to do in the area and helping us with recommendations about our travel to get there. There were good basic supplies and comprehensive instructions about everything in the villa and also recommendations for the local area.
The villa is beautiful and if you want peace and tranquility is the perfect place. There are plenty of places to sit out, either in the woods, on the terrace or by the pool and there are lovely views from the property. There is also plenty of space inside so you don't feel like you're living on top of each other.
Only tiny problem is no air conditioning so it can get quite hot in the villa but this feels like a very minor thing when you take into account all the plus points.
We had a really relaxing week spent mostly at the villa but we also went to visit Carcassonne and Montsegur which are both within easy distance as are many more beautiful places to visit but it would be very easy just to spend the week in the villa and only leave to get food.
I would thoroughly recommend Villa Marina to anyone who wants a quiet retreat that is pretty close to amenities and it would be great for either a group of friends together or for a family. You do need a car though.
I am delighted that you liked the villa and location and thank you very very much for your review. Best wishes Kathy

"Beautiful, simple, homely and comfortable"
We were among the first people to stay in Villa Marina and felt very lucky to do so. We were very impressed with how homely the place was, as if the owners had just left and we were house sitting for them. It was full of nice touches and little extras: a well stocked food cupboard and wine rack; loads of cleaning materials and supplies such as candles and spare light bulbs and things. Quite often in self catering you have to go out and buy so many things that always seem to be taken away with every changeover. I thought that the owners were being very trusting by leaving the house so well stocked and it matched the friendliness and warmth that we felt from them when making the booking.
We had a great holiday and are seriously thinking about returning to the villa in 2012.
