The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This area averages about 300 hours of sunshine a year and summer can last from May to November.
About 40 minutes away is the famous medieval city of Carcassonne (as mentioned in the Labyrinth). The old walled city with castle, shops and restaurants is a must to visit. They often have shows on and in July have the famous burning of the city, a fantastic firework display, and in August they have jousting everyday. Just outside Carcassonne is a lovely 18 hole golf course and we can arrange tee times and clubs for you. There is also an Australian Park and Bird Park.
This is Cathare Country so we have many splendid chateaux to visit, Montsegur and Queribus to name a few.
Visit Rennes-le-Chateau, the mysterious and infamous village featured in The Da Vinci code only about 15 minutes away but can be seen from the house. Rennes-les-Baines is a thermal spa town as mentioned in The Sepulchre by Kate Moss
In summer there are many water sports. There is swimming in the local outdoor pools or at the many lakes in the area, white water rafting and canoeing. There is also fishing, quad biking and horse riding and golf (we have clubs you can borrow)
The beaches of Narbonne and Perpignan are only about an hour and a half away.
This is also wine country, you can visit many of the local "caves" and sample the red, white and rose produced in this area or even try the famous Blanquette, the first champagne produced in France.
In winter the ski slopes are nearby - 40kms. There are several to choose from catering for all levels.
You can also visit Andorra, about 2 hours away, a drive through spectacular scenery and then visit the many shops to stock up on duty free and have a nice meal in one of the many restaurants.
We are about 2 -2.5 hours away from the new viaduct bridge at Millau, the longest suspension bridge in the world.
The Carcassonne / Esperaza area
Esperaza is a quiet village with the river Aude running through it. You can easily walk into the village with its 2 mini markets, bakers ,butchers, post office and chemists. There are also bars, restaurants and a train station. On Sundays the village comes alive with it's Sunday market, well known in the area. Here you can get all your local produce and try the local cheeses and honey and wine.
In Esperaza we have a dinosaur museum, a hat museum and a honey museum. There are several Pyreneean walks in this area and one goes right past the house.
We are 40 minutes from Carcassonne where you can visit the medieval city, take a boat on the Canal du Midi or have a round of golf.
Through July to September all the local villages have their fetes, with music & dancing. There are many evening markets. In July there is a folklore festival, this has groups from all over the world showing their traditional dance and music. It culminates with a grand firework display. The Tour De France often comes past or close to this area and in Quillan they have an annual cycle race in August round the village attended by some of the top riders.
20 minutes away are the thermal spas of Alet-les-Baines and Rennes-les-Baines. The spas date back to Roman times. We are also centrally located to visit the Cathar castles such as Montsegurand Queribus
Esperaza is an ideal base to discover all there is to see in the Aude region.

Pre-booking and directions to La Mariete were very good indeed and a warm welcome from Rose and Terry. During our two week stay Rose and Terry were on hand if needed and offered the use of bikes and helpful directions to places of interest including Le Tour de France! The house was very clean and had everything a couple would need for a holiday. The wooden patio offers a pleasant place for outdoor meals and the swimming pool is ideal for a relaxing dip. There was an excellent folder with guides to tourist attractions and activities and a tv with English channels to keep up to date with news back in the UK. The view from the house is beautiful and the local area has plenty of signposted walks if you enjoy a stroll in the hilly countryside. Esperaza is a short walk down the hill from the house and is a relatively small town with a few restaurants. Ideal for those wishing a quieter holiday. We found the local people to be very helpful and friendly. |

La Mariete exceeded all our expectations - in a beautiful location at the top of a hill with wonderful views ,and within walking distance of Esperaza. The gite is small but ideal for 2 people or a family with young children , - it is very well equipped with everything you need and more ! It provides a good base for exploring the area but a haven of peace to return to after a busy day ,with a lovely garden to relax in , and a pool to cool off in ! Rose and Terry are the perfect hosts - friendly and helpful without being intrusive. For us , it was the perfect place to stay. |

We've stayed here 3 years on the trot and tend to use it for relaxing -it is quiet and peaceful. The gite is very comfortable and has everything you need. The owners, Terry and Rose are very friendly and helpful. We love the privacy, you have your own terrace, garden and full use of the pool. If you want to explore, you dont have to go far. The surrounding area is lovely and there's plenty to do whether you want to walk or sight see. I wouldn't think twice about going back again. |
