The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

500m.above sea level, the cottage is in the foothills of the Pyrenees , yet only 1hr. from the Mediterranean. It lies just above a beautiful plateau formed by an ancient lake bed. Steeped in Cathar history, the area is famous for its castles and lakes. If you liked the books: Labyrinth, The De Vinci Code or the Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, this is the region to explore. Wildlife abounds; rare birds like the hen harrier, red & black kite, vulture and eagles are seen here. Summers can be hot , with occasional dramatic thunderstormns. Rainy summers have been known! Spring displays a profusion of wildflowers; autumn is still warm and colourful and is one of the best seasons. Winters are usually very cold but I have been out in my shirt sleeves in January.! Blizzards can occur and local ski stations are near, as is Andorra, approx. 2 hrs. away.
The Carcassonne / Puivert area
The village of Puivert has its own pretty, swimming lake with beach, sports area, campsite and cafe. There is a restaurant, post office, mini market, bakery, and museum, all a 10.min. walk from the cottage. The Chateau is open all year round . The cottage sits @ about 1.5 km. above Puivert.
In the immediate area there are many activities offered, including fishing, swimming, watersports, gliding, horse riding, cycling and walking. Some bikes are for hire from the Puivert campsite and within about a 20km. radius there exist further bike hire facilities.
The famous city of Carcassonne is a 45 min. drive away; the castle of Montsegur is very near and there are lively street markets held regularly in nearbye towns. The French are rightly proud of their local products and celebrate them with frequent fairs and markets
Ski areas such as Camurac, Ax Les Thermes and Mont D'Olmes -are all within an hour's drive and Andorra is about 2 .5 hrs. away, as is northern Spain

Every summer we escape to Alice's beautiful cottage. The area offers everything you need to relax and recharge your batteries. The cottage is simple and comfortable with a great roof terrace for birdwatching, star gazing and sunbathing. The local lake is a 10 minute walk down the road and there are many interesting places to visit including Cathar castles, pretty villages, markets and mountains. |

The property was more than we expected, very comfortable and plenty of space. We had everything we needed for a relaxing hoiday. The view from the roof terrace was beautiful. In fact we wished could have stayed longer. Great place to stay if you like peace and quiet! During our stay we visited Quillan which has a great market on a Wednesday and then on Thursday we went to Carcassonne, hired bikes and cycled along the Canal du Midi. |

Even better holiday this year. We'll be back! C.Dudgeon 2010 Scotland
"A wonderful experience! Coming from a large metropolitan area, I thoroughly enjoyed the tranquillity of the evening and the beautiful view of the stars, By day, the view the green hills and castle were amazing. The house offers all the modern comforts of home, but yet maintains its country charm. This is now one of my vacation favourites and have recommended it to family and friends. " Dr and Mrs. Aliaga Rossel from Paris.. MAY 2011
