Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 4
A traditional, rather rustic and simple, but pretty house in small terrace of a little, very rural hamlet, surrounded by truly spectacular views and stunning landscapes. Suitable for couples or small groups of 4 - 5, but not really adviseable for small children. Eco friendly in many ways; it has a woodburner, recycling and composting facilities and tiled and wooden floors. A kitchen/living area leads to a small, shower/utility room with washing machine, a hallway, a WC and second living room, which can be used as an extra bedroom.
Upstairs there are two large double bedrooms and a bathroom with bath/shower over and WC. Then the attic /loft/3rd.bedroom opens through sliding glass doors to a south facing ROOF TERRACE with magnificent views and ample space for sitting/eating & drying laundry.
Further facilities include : TV, DVD and WI FI access, although the satellite reception in this area of France no longer allows British TV programmes. These can, however, be streamed through your laptop or tablet. **
The Puivert valley is approx. 400m. above sea level, lying in the foothills of the PYRENEES. It is a unique landscape with lush, silt soils, limestone crags and deep, wooded areas. It is particular rich in plant, bird and other wildlife.
A lovely swimming and fishing lake with sandy beach and campsite nearbye is just down the lane.
From the back of the house, across a narrow alley and through a barn is a big field/garden with those fantastic views.. The garden is mostly down to flower meadow , grassland and trees. You can sit for hours on the terrace or in the garden, watching the birds: booted eagles, hen harriers, red/black kites amongst many, both rare and common. On clear nights the stars and bats] are amazing. For those interested in wildlife there are so many birds, butterflies, wild boar, deer, wild cat, pine & beech marten, and gorgeous wildflowers at certain times of year.

The 1/2 acre wildlife garden is accessed through the barn and from a gravel terrace. It is planted with many trees and shrubs. It has wild flower meadow areas and mown areas. Beyond this garden is another 1/4 acre hay meadow. It has plenty of space for picnics and play but the owner would ask that the trees, structures and plants are respected and that the neighbours' boundaries and gardens are also duly respected.
Communal parking is in the small square. Owners are expected to park considerately.
Recycling and composting are encouraged.
The lake just down the lane has a sandy beach for swimmers and sunbathers and a fishing area on the other side. During the summer a cafe and small restaurant are open. There is also a campsite during the summer. The owners' 3 oldish bikes can be borrowed but we would ask you to care for them, pump up the tyres or repair punctures with the kit available. It may be possible to hire other bikes from the campsite.
No smoking please.
An English couple nearby maintain and service the house and are available to help and deal with any problems concerning the house. We would expect you to leave the house tidy and clean when you leave.
Although I have tried to ensure that the house is quite safe, the owner accepts no responsibility for any accident or injury sustained within or without the boundaries of the premises.
The house is quite rustic and simple but has everything you would need. No dishwasher or tumbledryer. All water is metered. We ask all tenants to replace small items like crockery/glass if they break them and notify us of any other damage/breakages.
A £70 breakages deposit is required, returnable after your departure and when the house has been checked over
A deposit is necessary to secure your booking in the first place. This is part of the total rental.
The Languedoc-Roussillon region
500m.above sea level, the cottage is in the foothills of the Pyrenees , yet only 1hr. from the Mediterranean. It lies just above a beautiful plateau formed by an ancient lake bed. Steeped in Cathar history, the area is famous for its castles and lakes. If you liked the books: Labyrinth, The De Vinci Code or the Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, this is the region to explore. Wildlife abounds; rare birds like the hen harrier, red & black kite, vulture and eagles are seen here. Summers can be hot , with occasional dramatic thunderstormns. Rainy summers have been known! Spring displays a profusion of wildflowers; autumn is still warm and colourful and is one of the best seasons. Winters are usually very cold but I have been out in my shirt sleeves in January.! Blizzards can occur and local ski stations are near, as is Andorra, approx. 2 hrs. away.
The village of Puivert has its own pretty, swimming lake with beach, sports area, campsite and cafe. There is a restaurant, post office, mini market, bakery, and museum, all a 10.min. walk from the cottage. The Chateau is open all year round . The cottage sits @ about 1.5 km. above Puivert.
In the immediate area there are many activities offered, including fishing, swimming, watersports, gliding, horse riding, cycling and walking. Some bikes are for hire from the Puivert campsite and within about a 20km. radius there exist further bike hire facilities.
The famous city of Carcassonne is a 45 min. drive away; the castle of Montsegur is very near and there are lively street markets held regularly in nearbye towns. The French are rightly proud of their local products and celebrate them with frequent fairs and markets
Ski areas such as Camurac, Ax Les Thermes and Mont D'Olmes -are all within an hour's drive and Andorra is about 2 .5 hrs. away, as is northern Spain

"A peaceful and beautiful retreat."
Every summer we escape to Alice's beautiful cottage. The area offers everything you need to relax and recharge your batteries. The cottage is simple and comfortable with a great roof terrace for birdwatching, star gazing and sunbathing. The local lake is a 10 minute walk down the road and there are many interesting places to visit including Cathar castles, pretty villages, markets and mountains.

"Peaceful and relaxing"
The property was more than we expected, very comfortable and plenty of space. We had everything we needed for a relaxing hoiday. The view from the roof terrace was beautiful. In fact we wished could have stayed longer. Great place to stay if you like peace and quiet!
During our stay we visited Quillan which has a great market on a Wednesday and then on Thursday we went to Carcassonne, hired bikes and cycled along the Canal du Midi.
