The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Region steeped in medieval history with spectacular Cathar monuments and castles. Mountains, rivers, canals. The region offers a variety of beautiful scenery for walking, cycling and The Pyrenees and Mediterranean are within easy reach and a visit to Spain or a shopping trip to Andorra are alternative ideas for a day out. In addition, the thriving city of Toulouse is just 90km away.

The town comprises two distinct parts : la Cité occupies a plateau on the right bank of the river Aude while the Bastide Saint-Louis lies on the left bank. The medieval walled city dates back to the 6th Century, has 52 towers and 2 miles of ramparts and is still inhabited to this day. Narrow streets offer a vast selection of shops and restaurants.

La Cité is a classified World Heritage Site, as is the famous Canal du Midi which runs through the town and on which you can take boat trips with commentary from April to October.

The town comes alive in summer with various lively festivals including the Music Festival in July when many and diverse musical and cultural events take place throughout the town and in the outdoor theatre.

Lac Cavayere is a 10-minute drive from Carcassonne and is an ideal venue for family outings: here you can have a go at mini golf, volleyball, petanque or just relax on one of the beaches.

"A five star holiday on a budget"

I travelled with my teenage children (19 and 15) to Carcassonne from 2 to 9 July 2013. We took a Ryanair flight from Dublin (tip: Tuesday flights are the cheapest!) and landed at 9.30am. We then took a taxi to cover the short distance to L'Ile (10 minutes, 17 Euro) and arrived at a quiet lane, just outside the walls of the medieval Cité of Carcassonne. The gite was spic and span, with all mod cons, a fantastic shower room, a beautiful French double bed in the bedroom and a comfortable sofa bed in the living room. The living room was spacious enough to leave the sofabed as a bed for the duration of our stay. The owner, Julianne, had ensured there was a lovely welcome pack with milk, butter, bread, jam and cheese and a bottle of wine. So on our first morning, we left Dublin at 6.15am and at 10am we had breakfast on the patio of the gite, with the scent of the garden's white roses and lavender all around us..
The gite is perfectly situated: 5 min walk from the medieval Cité, 10 minute walk, across the Pont Vieux to the Bastide with its markets, boutiques, great cafe's and restaurants.
Its tick walls keep the gite lovely and cool in the summer heat. A few times we walked to the bus station (Le Dome), just across the Pont Vieux and took Ligne 1 (1 Euro per person) to the fantastic lake 15 minutes outside Carcassonne. The lake has an adventure high rope course, pedalo's, canoes and gigantic inflatables, and there's a walk way around the lake.
The gite came with three bicycles and we made some great cycle tours in the area, mostly on cycle lanes away from the main roads.
With two teenagers it's not always easy to get a holiday destination that satisfies everyone, but this one was superb! I will certainly recommend it to my friends and family and hope to return some time to explore some more!
Many thanks to Julianne for her care and great tips.

"The best decision you could make if you're looking for somewhere to stay in Carcassonne."

This little gite is absolutely perfect for a couple or small family staying in Carcassonne. It's close to the castle and the town but also is in a lovely rural area right by a stream. The terrace overlooks a field and is secluded. The bedroom is nicely done out and the bed very comfortable. Kitchen is modern and again nicely done. And the owner Julianne is beyond helpful. I proposed to my partner whilst staying there and in the run up to my trip Julianne went out of her way to help me organise it.

Really couldn't recommend this property more.

"Perfect little getaway"

This is a delightful little gite in the perfect location near to the old walled city but in easy walking distance to the town as well. The gite is spotlessly clean and very comfortably furnished. We loved the little outside area - perfect for a glass of wine in the evening. Julianne was the perfect host - we were found fresh cheese, bread and a bottle of wine in the fridge on arrival and nothing was too much trouble. We loved using the bikes to cycle down the pretty canal. Great gite, fab owners and a wonderful weekend away - highly recommended.
