The Languedoc-Roussillon region
This beautiful region of South West France enjoys one of the best climates in the country with plenty of sunshine most days of the year. The diversity of the region can offer many different types of holiday from relaxing on one of the beaches to indulging in the abundance of activities available in the area including golf, fishing, horse riding, cycling, go-karting, water park, kayaking and white water rafting.
There are many wonderful places to visit in the area including the Black Mountains for cycling, walking and a recreational lake. The Mediterranean offering miles of sandy beaches, the Pyrenees/Andorra for walking, skiing and tax free shopping and even the Costa Brava in Northern Spain is just a two hour drive.
The region has a rich and diverse history famous for its Catharism, evidence of which can be seen all around in the shape of fortified towns, monuments and castles, brought to life in the novels 'Labyrinth' and 'Sepulchre' by Kate Mosse.
For those of you who just want to relax you can always take a tour around one of the largest wine regions in the world sampling the delights of the beautiful countryside and Chateaux along the way, and of course enjoy some of the finest cuisine in the world.
Malves en Minervois is truly a superb location for an all round family holiday. Nestled amongst the beautiful vineyards of the Minervois and just 15 minutes drive away from the magnificent medieval world heritage site of 'La Cite', Carcassonne.
Malves en Minervois is a small, traditional village with its own mini supermarket selling everything you need including fresh bread and pastries daily. In the courtyard of the Chateau you will find the Cafe bar and adjacent, the village park.
Within five minutes drive you will reach the bustling Canal du Midi port of Trebes where there are several restaurants, shops and supermarkets.
Whichever direction you take from Malves en Minervois there are some great places to visit:
Lac de la Cavayere(Carcassonne beach and lake) is a fifteen minute drive away. Here there is a sandy beach, swimming, picnic areas, walks and other leisure activities including a superb treetop adventure course and
waterpark for all ages.
Kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting are all available on the River Aude from the nearby village of Puicheric. This could also be combined with a trip to the leisure lake and beach at Lac de Jouarre at Homps on the Canal du Midi.
The famous Canal du Midi flows through this area where you can enjoy boat trips,walks, cycling( bike hire available locally) or just relax at one of the canal side bars watching the world go by with a glass of local wine!
A visit to Carcassonne must not be missed; the magnificent 'La Cite' with its narrow cobbled streets, ramparts, castle walls and turrets.Here you will find an abundance of buzzing restaurants and in the Summer you can enjoy plenty of entertainment including jousting tournaments. A short stroll across the 'Pont Vieux' will take you to the lower town, here you will find quaint boutiques and a regular market selling all varieties of local produce. Festivals and concerts are often held here in the summer months.
Festivals, 'vide grenier' (car boot sales) and markets are regularly held in surrounding villages, these are advertised locally and are not to be missed.
